Trey Smith looks like an NFL player now.

Chance Hall looked far more SEC ready than Richmond and indeed he was.

A former college coach told me offensive line was about the hardest position to evaluate. Some kids who can manhandle high school linemen fall out when they are matched with the real big boys. It comes easy with a huge weight advantage but ain't as much fun in college.

Richmond has done fine - no doubt needed a redshirt year. a lot of the bricks need time to season up. Cade Mays may be similar to Trey Smith - these guys are the real deal.

The HS recruiting rankings are fun offseason stuff but when the pads are on and hitting starts - the recalibration of armchair rankings and who is a real ballplayer and who is not yet ready can begin.

Trey Smith is a 247 Composite 5 star. Richmond was a 4 star. If you're into such things? I'm against this board's tendency to demonize our signees if they're not instant stars, but I remember that Richmond redshirting wasn't a surprise. Word was that he needed to develop strength and fill out his frame. Not the scouting reports on Trey Smith...at least the majority.

Agreed. Smith is a Nick Saban and Urban Meyer bumping into each other at his high school type of player. They pulled all stops to land a talent.

I agree that beating Bama for a recruit is a good sign, but Bama also takes prospects. Richmond did consider Alabama. Most sources thought Richmond would not be game ready immediately. Most OL aren't.

Im just glad to see us have this much talent coming in on the line. With richmond, smith and mays on the way thats a bevy of talent at tackle. Throw in tatum, chance hall, jack jones, johnson and others and the line is looking excellent for years to come.

Not every high school football experience is the same. Do you play class A or class 6A? Who were you coached by? Did your school have a real weight program? There a lot of considerations behind the star system.

Kelly will get 1000 easily this year imo. Little crazy legs behind an aggressive, mostly experienced front could spell trouble for these opposing defenses. I think these linemen block hard for Kelly bc they like him

There were great strides from Richmond's early season form to his late season form. All he has to do is duplicate the same strides this off season and he's right where we want him.

Playing LT and RT is 2 different worlds.

I think maybe that Richmond is a RT all the way and having to play LT slows him down by having to think 1/2 a second and that gives the D a step advantage and that hurts him.

If we find our 2 really good LT's for rotation and can put Drew R back over to RT then we just might see DR become a beast RT for us the next 2 years.

Many times being forced to play out of position really hurts the players and our Team as a whole.

Also always keep in mind that learning to play the O line is 1 of the toughest positions to learn plus having to get time to learn to gel really well with the other O linemen.

Best case situation is to be able to redshirt at least 2 O linemen every year so they can beef up, get lots stronger and get ahead of their learning curve.

Nice to finally be getting some good depth.

I doubt that, but if he is, he is not the type player that will win SEC championships. If one can not take the heat, get out of the competition and find a place where one does not have to earn the opportunity to play.

I doubt that, but if he is, he is not the type player that will win SEC championships. Competition makes players improve. If one can not take the heat, get out of the competition and find a place where one does not have to earn the opportunity to play.

I've always seen RT as the more physical mauling type. He'd be behind Chance Hall there and Cade Mays on the way.

If anything, we should be discussing how TS destroyed Kongbo in the COL drill.

Other positions on the line and who fills them, affects HIM so let it happen...it's going to anyway.

I hope we play 2 or 3 diff guys at Left OT in those first two games, just to give the young backup/challengers some blooding, confidence and grading film for coaches.
