Transfer QB or Existing?

Guys keep in mind that contacting players who are not in the portal is against the NCAA's rules and could result in punishment if brought to light. That does not mean Tennessee is not doing it, but it means that such discussions are being kept extremely private and we will not hear about them. We may not know we were interested in a QB until he signs with us and we may not know the name of who is coming to us until the day he signs with us.

I don't think we can guarantee any transfer QB a starting job. Anyone who comes in should be ready to compete for the position.
If it’s a starting quarterback at a place like K State, Ga Tech, Illinois, he’s not coming to compete, he’s coming to start. Also, the people putting up that kind of money aren’t doing it for a guy that isn’t slated to be the starter.

I think the NCAA has kinda thrown up their hands at this point. Everyone is tampering and they can’t do anything about it. Coaches have reported schools before, nothing is done. NCAA has their hands full as it is.

I’ll ride with Merk and Gmac and not sweat it. Don’t want either to enter the portal, and I fear that will happen if a portal Qb is brought in.
Mac isn’t going anywhere. Merk needs another year to be ready. Him as the backup would be good for him.

Because there are so many intermediaries that coaches have at least a little plausible deniability.
Agents and collectives can talk all they want.

And who is the Right one who will sign and who will not chase away our current two QBs and our incoming QB?

Plus get us 10 wins and into the playoffs.
Lower that expectation brother there’s no way we are winning 10 games this season given all that has happened.. I’m happy with 8 expecting 7

We just need to get a solid QB for depth. Do just like we did last year have a solid run game and a great defense. Hopefully developed a QB as the season goes on. GO VOLS!

I posted this in a previous thread, but I thought it would be relevant here as well:

Of the 958 offensive plays we ran last year 61% were run plays and only 39% were pass plays. Regarding these pass plays, many were either unsuccessful, or were for less than 10 yards. That all said, you don’t need the second coming of Peyton Manning to do the same! In fact, you could probably put the 2nd chair, Tuba-player in there to hand the ball off 61% of the time.

So, you are telling me that a 4-star, redshirt, or the 5-star true freshman could not come close to the same numbers or results? I for one propose that they might do even better…even chancing an 11 or maybe 15-yard pass!! Perhaps, even exceeding Hooker’s numbers. GBO!
But to be successful running, there has to be a legitimate passing threat. The QB doesn’t have to be a superstar, but he does have to take what the defense gives him and occasionally create some fear downfield.

I think you have better odds of winning with an experienced transfer QB if they can quickly process the felid and have decent accuracy. The guys we have on the roster have a higher ceiling than pretty much anybody we can pull out of the portal. However we are probably in win now mode. The time it would take Merk and Gmac to speed up their decision making and releases could cost us some key games. They could look like good starters by mid season or they could need another year in the system to be able to adequately time throws and reads in the system. Nico was generally considered to be a good processor out of HS but he also took too long to process even with a season as a starter and an redshirt season under his belt.

Of the 958 total offensive plays we ran last year, Nico only completed 213 passes, again many of these inside 10 yards. While I agree with you that the run and the pass game help each other, I would also propose that there are a myriad of QBs in the SEC that could do as well, if not better, than Nico…perhaps we have a couple on our team already. GBO!

If you think our current 2 and our incoming QB are going to be here a year from now, you are wrong

I hope Tennessee looks for a quarterback in the portal, but I also hope CJH gives the two on board every chance to win the job.

I heard today on a sports talk show that there are over 1900 college players in the portal now. What a joke this portal jumping has become. Worse than herding cats. Even if you get a commitment today, who knows if they will still be there in the fall when the season begins.

Do you all think that any QB we bring in will be better suited to run our offense than the guys we have in house?

he might have the skill set to run the offense but I have a hard time seeing someone come in and execute to the satisfaction of the head coach. Its a tough learn to come to campus in June and be ready to play in September.. Its possible... But Heupel has high expectations. I think he is confident with the guys on hand to execute, with mistakes as all freshman make them. JMO

there has been almost 3,500 enter the portal for 2025. Only almost 1, 800 are committed. Lot of bodies out there.

No. If we didn’t have confidence in them to carry the torch, then why the h*ll did we recruit them.

I tend to agree. Nico seemed to miss 10-15 yd. slant throws more ofter than he hit them. What Nico did best was throw the WR screen. That and running were his forte. He didn't do well at all on other throws.

Nope, I say go with what we have. Bring one in for depth. Hopefully it would be Gaston. I'm confident our current two will succeed!!!
