Transfer Portal Nationwide Breakdown

Damn we are going to have like 60 scholarship players this year
We currently have 87 scholarship players who are returning or joining as freshmen. We may lose a few of these and may pick up a transfer or two. We will fewer players than some teams who may go to 100 with the COVID rules. But we will have plenty of players to fill positions. We will be hurting for experience at a few positions.

There is a good discussion of roster numbers in another thread.

He did not play well in 2020 but he has great talent and potential. He might thrive in a new system and I would encourage him to add back some weight.
I really liked the way Henry played, especially as a freshman but I agree that 2020 was not great for him. A lot of our defensive breakdowns started with Henry. He's not to blame for all of it of course but for example the slant crossing route we could not cover was usually his responsibility to the inside most of the time. I think Henry is a really good player and hope he comes back but I too think he needs a little more weight as well. Wish him the best whatever he decides.

Thought I would share some numbers with you. this is from the 2021 Transfer Portal. Still 8-10 players going into it everyday.

Total of 1,212 players currently. 509 of them have found a home.

QBs - 123 entered, 66 have found a place
RBs - 108 entered, 49 transferred
WRs/TEs - 255 entered, 96 transferred
OLs - 123 entered, 69 Transferred
DLs - 162 entered, 74 transferred
LBs - 139 entered , 56 transferred
DBs - 231 entered , 91 transferred
STs - 29 entered, 8 transferred

42 players entered the portal and decided to stay with the school they were trying to leave.
That’s crazy! The NCAA will have to step in and regulate this somehow. Probably like the signing periods for H.S. Athletes (unless they already do and I’m just ignorant?)
The portal is now more exciting and bigger than national signing day, especially since the early signing period has been in play.
GBO!!

#11 was a beast and he will be missed. Cornbread screwed him up. Was all world the year before, I think people forget that.

I've got to count the number of schools but I've noticed a lot of schools signed less than 20 this cycle. Leaving lots of room for transfers..

IF NCAA passes the one time transfer with immediate eligibility, the portal numbers will rise a lot more.. You will see more freshman and sophomores jumping ship if not playing like they wish. It will be pro sports free agency..

You nailed it! With the pay for play issue, we may actually be seeing the birth of college football free agency.
I heard an analyst on the radio yesterday, talking about how he could see schools such as Georgia Tech and Miami, benefiting greatly from the pay for play and transfer portal, simply due to location and opportunities to make money in the Atlanta and South Beach markets.
It’s wild to think about but you could see bidding wars between Pilot flying J, paying a kid to put his face on gas pumps and some other schools booster, offering pay to put him on billboards for car dealerships.
I like the fact that we have a dish network guy in the fold. That could potentially be big time exposure!
GBO!!

Henry TooToo's "bad" year brings him down to everybody else's good year level. I do agree he needs to find a way to put that weight back on too many Ols, had their way with him. Although he was frequently double teamed being our best player on defense.

The 28 is a misleading number. Most are either walk ons or players that did not work out. There are current 8 players in the portal that we will actually miss. 3 of those may still come back.
OL- Wanya Morris- will miss
OL- Jahmir Johnson- will miss- may be back
RB- Ty Chandler – SR – will miss now that Gray is gone & Brown may be
RB- Eric Gray – will miss
LB- Henry To'o To'o – will miss – may be back
LB- Deandre Johnson – will miss
LB- Quavaris Crouch – will miss -may be back
S- Key Lawrence – will miss
I will not miss a one of them that decides to transfer, not hating on any of these young men. I’m just gonna root for the guys wearing orange

Our roster so bad and Beldar Cornbread’s defensive recruiting so bad people think #11 is good. He would be NO BETTER than 2nd string on at least 5-6 SEC teams.
HonestlyI think Henry T is definitely above average at the least but the D has been so bad who can tell?

we have plenty of players without the 28... practice bodies might be the issue in most cases when 20 or 28 players leave but with our current numbers, we are good for the spring practice.

I suspect after spring practice we have another round of players hitting the portal..

I think you are right. Our starting groups will be ok. Wont have a ton of depth for rotating and practice.
Transfers in the spring will most likely be from realizing they won't be starters or receiving alot of playing time. Maybe we'll gain a few transfers to fill some voids.

So, maybe I missed it, but how many Seniors are coming back due being allowed the extra year?

In his post NSD pressor Riley said that OU had a prior relationship with both Lawrence and Morris because we offered both and recruited them heavily coming out of HS. Gray was a total surprise who contacted OU first.

Henry T’s worst performance area was in coverage responsibilty. That is more in knowing the assignments than physicality. Maybe coaching is the problem or maybe Henry T didn’t apply himself in learning what his responsibilities were.

Am I alone is saying HenryT was not an elite SEC defender? We can do better.

In my opinion, "elite" is a term thrown around too much to the point it is diluted from meaning. I think Henry T could start for 90% of the teams in the SEC and nearly 100% for the teams across the country. In what some are describing as a down year for him, he averaged nearly 8 tackles/game (17th in the SEC) and tied for 4th in the SEC for TFL's. All the while being coached by Niedermeyer who is in his first year coaching this position.

Count me in the group of needing players like him on the field at every position for us, elite or not.
