Thought I would share some numbers with you. this is from the 2021 Transfer Portal. Still 8-10 players going into it everyday.

Total of 1,212 players currently. 509 of them have found a home.

QBs - 123 entered, 66 have found a place
RBs - 108 entered, 49 transferred
WRs/TEs - 255 entered, 96 transferred
OLs - 123 entered, 69 Transferred
DLs - 162 entered, 74 transferred
LBs - 139 entered , 56 transferred
DBs - 231 entered , 91 transferred
STs - 29 entered, 8 transferred

42 players entered the portal and decided to stay with the school they were trying to leave.

It would hard for me as a player to enter the portal unless I had a strong indication a certain school would be willing to offer me a scholarship. Of course most can always return back (unless a coach has told him otherwise) to their original school. So, that brings up another issue...isn't it against NCAA rules to contact a person BEFORE they enter the portal? I know there's ways around that for those who don't care about the rule. It seemed (i could be totally wrong here) that Lincoln Riley went to great lengths to explain none of the Vols transferring to his program were linked in any way. Said he recruited and knew them well out of high school except for Eric Gray. That could be completely true but he spent a lot of time recently making sure we all knew each situation was different. IDK but i think this portal thing will calm down a bit in a few years.

it is against the rules for a player or coach to speak with each other prior to entering the portal..

I'm sure Riley didn't speak with them until they were in the portal, but players talk to each other. Woodi Washington and Reggie Grimes @ Oklahoma knew all 3 real well..

If they go ahead with the one transfer rule and immediate eligibility, I expect the portal to be worse. JMO

I also think that after spring practice, likely to see 400-500 more kids hit the 2021 portal.

28 players put their name in the portal

3 decided to remain at Tennessee - Pope, Shamburger and Edwards

17 have landed elsewhere

8 are still pondering what to do

The 28 is a misleading number. Most are either walk ons or players that did not work out. There are current 8 players in the portal that we will actually miss. 3 of those may still come back.
OL- Wanya Morris- will miss
OL- Jahmir Johnson- will miss- may be back
RB- Ty Chandler – SR – will miss now that Gray is gone & Brown may be
RB- Eric Gray – will miss
LB- Henry To'o To'o – will miss – may be back
LB- Deandre Johnson – will miss
LB- Quavaris Crouch – will miss -may be back
S- Key Lawrence – will miss

Yeah schools and coaches can’t reach out, but a players circle, mom, dad, trainer... can reach out and gauge interest... it’s how many players enter the portal and find a home within a day or two.. like Cade... the high profile transfers have a good idea of where they are going and who wants them before they enter

we have plenty of players without the 28... practice bodies might be the issue in most cases when 20 or 28 players leave but with our current numbers, we are good for the spring practice.

I suspect after spring practice we have another round of players hitting the portal..

I am I correct that portal additions count against your 25 annual scholarships to give out and players leaving through the portal do not add back to your 25?

This being the case, wouldn't it be smart to get rid of the 25/yr limit and just go by the 85? Or maybe allow 30 per year instead of 25? You could see some dangerously low roster sizes with this system.

Over 5 years you could sign a max of 125. If you had attrition to injuries, graduation, and the portal of 60 (rsSR 20, SR 15, JR 10, SO 10, FR 5) your active scholarship roster would be 65, and 20 of those would be true freshmen.

Some may disagree but Chandler and Gray are easily replaceable.
I won't miss Johnson's critical and stupid 15-yard penalties.

Lawrence, Jahmir, Morris, Crouch, and HenryT will certainly hurt. But if they all leave, the hurt is bad ... that's 5 out of 22 starters.

Around half of those 17 needed to go or weren’t contributing anyway, so no real loss, frees up more for later!!! Looking at defensive players, looks like great opportunity to make upgrades.

I think a lot of those leaving never bought in anyway because of the situation that UT has been in over the past few years. The continuous back and forth between coaches and the meddling of the AD was more than some of them wanted to be a part of. That along with the possibility of sanctions in which some may have been part of and the new portal rules, it was really the perfect storm.

Interesting numbers.

Assume an average roster has this breakup of the 85 scholarships:
  • 4 QB
  • 5 RB
  • 14 WR & TE
  • 15 OL
  • 14 DL
  • 15 LB
  • 15 DB
  • 3 ST
I doubt that's 100% right, it's just a guess, but it's good enough for this purpose.

Given those estimates, across the 130 D1 programs, there would be:
  • 540 QBs
  • 650 RBs
  • 1,820 WRs & TEs
  • 1,950 OL
  • 1,820 DL
  • 1,950 LB
  • 1,950 DB
  • 390 ST
And comparing that to the number of portal users:
  • 123 of 540 QBs used the portal = 23% ... wow ... almost a quarter of all scholarship QBs entered the portal
  • 17% of RBs
  • 14% of WRs & TEs
  • 6% of OL ... the most loyal position group!
  • 9% of DL
  • 7% of LBs ... pretty loyal
  • 12% of DBs
  • 7% of STs ... pretty loyal

Am I alone is saying HenryT was not an elite SEC defender? We can do better.

portal is not just D1 players. its players from all divisions. lots of walk-ons also.. FYI

Is there a rule or policy against recruiting active players? Not that everyone follows the rules... just curious.

Our roster so bad and Beldar Cornbread’s defensive recruiting so bad people think #11 is good. He would be NO BETTER than 2nd string on at least 5-6 SEC teams.

Coaches can’t make contact with players on another teams roster... same with NLI situation... however as mentioned above... there are ways for my people to get in contact with your people.
