Trade Wars and Tariffs

I know the example you used stated they will have to choose empty shelves to avoid the tariff impact. Clearly it adds more than you realize

You also only cite finished goods in your simplistic example whereas tariff impact is much more complex
they don't necessarily have to have empty shelves if they buy American made products. Many companies can avoid the tariffs by having their products made in the US rather than China.

and where was all this hand wringing at when Biden caused inflation to skyrocket then blamed businesses for price gouging when inflation is only caused by the gov't overspending? Biden had the gov't investigate specific products and profits made on those products.

"Options range from things like industry-wide investigations by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), other government investigations into specific products and company profits, pushing for new Capitol Hill legislation on the issue, or even price controls via executive order.

If some of those options sound familiar, that's because many of these tools were considered and even employed during Joe Biden's presidency as part of the then-Democratic charges of "price gouging" amid inflation. Formal inquiries were even launched in certain areas like meatpacking
."

as I have said many times, even if tarriffs cause a slight rise in prices- inflation, inflation will still be far lower than it was under Biden

You quoted this guy
Billy Bastek, Home Depot's executive vice president of merchandising
as an example of how tariffs won't raise prices. He then says that they absolutely will cause empty shelves and you suddenly want to argue against his take

US made goods will be more expensive, if they're available at all. You're skating all over this topic without understanding much at all.

Trump's actions will make items more expensive, more scarce or both. The article you posted clearly states that

Was in Home Depot the other day. They had dropped the bottom out of prices on several items I was in there for. I assume it was likely temporary and more related to just getting things sold to make space for other products coming in. With the whipsawing of on again, off again, raised again, lowered again tariffs, it’s hard to know how or when the effects of tariffs will show up. Agree tariffs are a tax on us, but seems to be all over the place at the moment wrt certain products as far as price movement goes. Can’t say I’ve personally felt it much, but I don’t think it’s had time to work its way through the system. I think this whole exercise was completely unnecessary and there were better ways to approach trade and trade imbalances without blunt force.

Talking to my wife she said something similar. There were a ton of sales running etc. to drive the customers into the store.

You must have missed the meltdown Trump had when it was revealed that Amazon had floated putting up the real cost of the tariffs next to the price on the Amazon website.

Trump lost his sh*t.

At some point, the Trumpers are going to have to come to terms that Donny imposed a tax on us and sold it as something that was good for us. And you bought it. Now he wants to blame the private businesses, beholden to stockholders as the reason it's happening.

If it wasn't evident already, he does think you're all stupid.

Yep. That was a hell of a tell, right there. Honestly, I'd really like to see that information on purchases from retailers. Any time a politician flips out over the release of information that would serve the public, the 'ol B.S. meter starts hitting the max levels.

As it does for anyone who hasn't been completely polarized by either party.

It's so cyclical now, that one might think that he's intentionally trying to manipulate the markets.

That notion has crossed my mind as well. I certainly wouldn't put it outside the realm of possibility. It may or may not be the big guy himself, but it also wouldn't surprise me if someone (Navarro, etc) is manipulating him taking advantage of the situation.

If there is one thing I've learned since 2021, he's the one who does the manipulating.

No way "they" let this go red over Memorial Day weekend.
Looks like it’s come back a little bit. I’ve resigned myself to the continued whipsawing on this matter. Thought hard about going all cash late last week when I had made everything back and then some. Just play the market for quick hits as DJT plays this back and forth.

Doesn’t DJT understand that he’s supposed to get each step of the negotiation process pre approved by the leftists and the MSM before doing anything? The Pelosi’s’ left some profits on the table since Trump didn’t share the insider information with them during a stock trading session instead of the middle of a holiday weekend.

I can see why you'd rather talk about Pelosi and the leftists rather this nonsense. Reminder that he said this FRIDAY.

Were you sitting in on the negotiations and know all of the details? Or are you just mad because he’s making adjustments to some or holding firm on other offers?

Which trade agreements are now less favorable to the US? Which countries are refusing to sit down and work out fair deals?

Do you want to keep things the same with China?

“I watched this film and I saw that it was filmed in many different locations around the world, including Africa,” said the reporter through the interpreter/moderator. “Of course, we all are aware of the tariffs that President Donald Trump has been imposing on overseas productions and films. So, is this particular movie under that tariff? And how much of the film was shot overseas?”

According to Entertainment Weekly, Cruise glanced at director Christopher McQuarrie, there was a pause (which, in my mind’s eye, is deliciously awkward), and then Cruise told the moderator: “We’d rather answer questions about the movie. Thank you.”

“I think that’s a fair answer,” replied the moderator.

That’s class.

That’s how it’s done.

That’s how you avoid alienating half your potential audience.

That’s how you keep the publicity on your reported $400 million project and not on stupid distractions.

That’s how you avoid headlines like, “Cruise slams Trump.”

That’s how you avoid Trump calling you a “dried up prune” and posting videos where he knocks you over with a golf ball.

The secret to becoming and remaining a movie star is a simple two-part plan: 1) choose decent projects that earn audience trust, and 2) retain the goodwill of your audience.

In other words, don’t star in crap movies and don’t be an *******.

How do you avoid being an arrogant *******? Easy — you say things like, “We’d rather answer questions about the movie. Thank you.”

Good points. And f*** DeNiro. And Springsteen.
