Trade Wars and Tariffs

You cannot seriously think that auto workers are going to take a big pay cut, can you? Especially given the spike in inflation roundly predicted is coming given this nonsensical Trump experiment?
You said the wage….. I am asking why you think it will stay the same. That is what you said.

Trump saying everything is going well actually makes sense if his relatives recently shorted the market in advance of his crushing the world economy.

“Victimless crime”

Right, and yes, if anything wages will rise.

Fact is, the World is such that the US benefits greatly form cheap labor and costs of production worldwide. The fact that we are now a service oriented economy is inescapably true.

I lament that fact all the time, but the fix is not to belligerently torpedo the US and world economies out of frustration or resentment.

Reagan:

President Ronald Reagan, who held office from 1981 to 1989, was a young man during the Great Depression.

Reagan spoke about how, at first, tariffs seem like a good idea, then said:

“For a while it works, but only for a short time.

“What eventually occurs is homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs.

“They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets.

“Then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs.

“High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign country and the triggering of fierce trade wars.

“The result is more and more tariffs. Higher and higher trade barriers and less and less competition.

“So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs, that subsidize inefficiencies and poor management, people stop buying.

“Then, the worst happens, markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industries shut down and millions of people lose their jobs.

For anyone who thinks this is even remotely a good idea:

Please explain the reasoning behind the 10% tariff on Costa Rica. The two primary imports from Costa Rica are bananas and coffee. The US produces negligible amounts of both. This is not something that can be cured by "bringing production back to the US." Hawaii is the only state in which either can be grown on a commercial scale, and bringing products from Hawaii to the continent is usually more expensive that importing them from Central America. Please tell me how this tariff makes any sense whatsoever.

The frustrating and disheartening thing about Trump is that some of the policies/objectives he pursues are worthwhile (in some shape, scale, or fashion) but the execution/tact/application are so egregiously stupid that it poisons the well for the policy/objective moving forward.

Curious question:

I oppose Trump’s tariffs (except against Mexico and China). I also opposed Joe Biden’s efforts to create worldwide corporate tax rates for the same reason. We benefit from cheap goods made abroad.

Do you oppose both policies or only one?

Interesting question, have to think about it. But I get your larger point that corporate tax rates can be manipulated to incentivize corporations to move or base elsewhere.

One initial point I'd make is that a corporate headquarters is not necessarily where manufacturing is -- in fact I'd go so far as to say the larger ones are never in the same place.

Kids.

After they get done picking our produce after school, they'll go to their second job at the factory to pull a graveyard shift à la Ron Swanson.

Bought time they contributed to society in a meaningful way.

Congratulations....like I said, job losses in March were the highest it has been since the recession of 2001 and 2008, but go ahead. Knock yourself out. If someone is intent on hurting themselves, who am I to stop them.

Ford trying to get rid of inventory before **** hits the fan.

People gotta be swan diving off the Trump train right now, right?

I was wondering what idiotic basis was assigned to those values because the other inputs are predefined. It’s absolutely hilarious if they combine to unity.

We call those “magic numbers” in my field and they are used to manipulate the data to give the desired answer 😂 Looks like the idiots that came up with this “formula” use the same playbook!

You're talking history. MAGA doesn't like history that makes them uncomfortable. If they're made to feel bad about anything they lash out. As I have always said, lack of empathy is a sad thing. Perfect example, they scream and try to bully people, but as soon as the table is turned, they cry victim. "Why are people so mean to me!?"

Spot on.

Everyone I know would like to see manufacturing return to the U.S. But you don't do it by making every day goods purchased by USA consumers 25 % more expensive.

Everyone I know would like to see illegal immigrants deported. But you don't do it by defying judicial orders which you find inconvenient to your purposes.

Reagan. A real Republican.

Trump isn’t qualified to clean Ron’s bedpan.

Oh Hogg. Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

As usual you asked the wrong question. While NAFTA technically eliminated most tariffs it allowed trade quotas which each nation set, so yeah xyz widget maker could sell their widgets in Canada tariff free Canada could and did set extremely low quotas and had massive tariffs on goods exceeding the quota. NAFTA also allowed signatories to subsidize various industries, Canada was mainly agricultural and forestry.

While NAFTA aimed to reduce trade barriers, it did not entirely eliminate quotas, particularly for certain agricultural sectors, and instead, it addressed them through mechanisms like tariff-rate quotas (TRQs).
