Trade Wars and Tariffs

Everyone knows that Argentina has the best beef.

European beef does suck and there isn't a lot of it.

USA, Argentina, Brazil, and even Korean beef are all better.
Europe doesn’t eat beef like everyone else either. It’s not that important too their diet. One of the dietary choices that makes them healthier than we are

Agree... I tell my European Colleagues that they desperately need an EU tariff on China.

Brazil has massive tariffs on everyone but it hasn't helped them because they still can't develop their own manufacturing for some reason... Brazil is an interesting case study in history as they should be a major economic power but they are so broken/corrupt that they can't get out of their own way.
They do produce the most beautiful people on the planet though

It really sucks that Dems are gonna win simply by not being Republicans and not bc they actually fixed anything about their stupid party. Continuous race to the bottom
The mob is fickle.
Maybe one day we will vote based on accomplishments instead of “against that person “. Hasn’t happened in my 56 years and it doesn’t look like you’re generation is any smarter…..but it could happen

In his boldest move yet, President Donald Trump imposed his Liberation Day tariffs against an island of penguins ....

US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, has issued the penguins a stiff warning against taking any retaliatory measures ....

When reached .... the penguins had no comment.
You get that the tariffs were there before, right?
They just adjusted with the new policy.

Love when reporters leave out the facts that don’t fit the narrative

Get ready to buy.
Everything is going to be on sale.
Gotta move quickly though. It will rebound hard , just like the first time Trump took office. This will be a 6 month-1year bounce.

Then you’ll disappear, just like last time
I'm desperately hoping this is true.

It would be fascinating to see that everyone in the country would be reacting the exact opposite if Biden had enacted these same tariffs. Literally everything every Dem is saying now, R's would be saying and vice versa.

True.

I think this plan is problematic. We only need to hit the real offenders like China and India. No reason to hit EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc.

Somewhat but you are forgetting the Trump chaos factor. My complaint is less about tarrifs, more abiut the kindergarten playground way in which they have been imposed.

Wow a sensible take from you.

I feel like it is 100% support Trump or we need no tariffs. There isn't a middle ground on here.

I kind of agree with this post... scary...

Those penguins have been ripping us off for some time though...
And the tariffs were adjusted as part of the new “reciprocal tariffs” or whatever they’re calling this tantrum. It happened automatically. It’s not like someone in the administration picked out the island and added tariffs to it.

True. Moreover, why would we want low-paying manufacturing jobs here? If these manufactured items are ultimately destined to be sold here, we'd have to make them at the same cost or less... otherwise we as consumers, we'd simply pay more for these goods. How does that benefit us economically.
Look at the running joke right now that Europe is threatening war against Russia while having to buy their energy from Russia.

Now imagine the running joke that the US would be (is?) militarily if we don't actually manufacture or produce anything, and have to rely on China, etc for everything we need? This is about much more IMO than just jobs and prices. It's about American sovereignty and our ability to stand as a global power.

(I think that's also why Trump is negotiating for some sort of stake in Canada and Greenland--i.e. access to control Arctic shipping lanes, and access to rare earth materials that are becoming a major part of production--and which China is making major runs at right now.)

Bingo. European countries are going to be fighting other european countries with sticks and stones. They'll send all their newly minted immigrants to the front line. Who's immigrants are best?

are you sure?
go to 1:15 in video

take ALL tarriffs off.....the tarriffs launched today and the tarriffs already got

Trump would NEVER settle for tarriffs to go back to how they were in the past..

Does the Premier of Ontario speak for the whole country? It sounds like folks are grasping at straws trying to claim a win for their team.

Imagine what will become of us if the US dollar is displaced as the world’s reserve currency…
Reserve currency and its positive / negative affects to American is not something I understand.

The current system hasn’t been the best arrangement for the long term interests of the US. The problem is we cannot just start manufacturing again overnight. It will take generations to get back the talent to do it right in the US.

However, any one who is under the impression this is the US being unreasonable is not tuned into reality. Work for a truly global industrial and you’ll see first hand the expense incurred and the hoops that must be jumped through to minimize the onerous tariff and tax impacts of other countries.

Next time you’re in Europe look around and try to find an American car dealership. There’s a reason they’ll be very very hard to find.

The US should be happy to enter into a truly free trade agreement with other countries. Don’t tariff us and we won’t tariff you.
Autos may not be the best example. Ford's strong in Europe and GM was until they sold out. Both have been known to make puzzling strategic decisions.

Mexico isn't the same from my experience. Mexico is more expensive than people think. The labor is lower but transportation and utilities are a lot higher in Mexico. The Chinese companies that I work with have to charge higher price for Mexico vs. China.

China was the perfect storm in that they had a great infrastructure and heavy governmental support to match their low labor.
That great infrastructure is recent.
