Trade Wars and Tariffs

We are early in the game. You don't know this.
I do know this, because I can do basic math.

Total US imports were only $3.3 trillion in 2024, do you need me to show you much you have to tariff 100% of imports to generate $2.4 Trillion?

The rate would also have to fluctuate based on import volume, so no, we can never replace the income tax with tariffs.

Well maybe they will have to reduce spending then.

Oh I don’t I favor a flat tax. I’m just not slow enough to believe Trump that he could deliver on tariff revenue replacing federal income tax 🤷‍♂️
The abortion we are living with right now took decades to become the monster it is. I don't think Trump can completely make it go away either, but at least he is making progress. And personally, I couldn't care less if ****** French wine costs double. It's one of the most overrated things on the planet.

He isn’t making progress though. His tariffs are precedent setting and they’re not even a tenth of federal revenue?

He's not "making progress". He's spending more, and you, me and everyone else is paying more in import tariffs to compensate.
.

We’ll agree on that!
Something that was instituted in 2003 (I believe) was IRMAA. It is designed to punish those who make/earn anything after retirement in order to prop up Medicare. The short story is that they look at how much income you have, and adjust your medicare payments if you exceed certain threshholds. The point is that the threshholds have been increasing an average of a little over 1% since then, but the penalties are increasing at close to 9%. What that means, is more and more people are going to find themselves paying this penalty as time goes on. The first thresshhold for married joint is $218,000. If you exceed that amount by $1, you get to pay the full penalty for medicare which is an additional $84/month... EACH. So when you start taking those RMDs from your 401k, make sure you don't go above those amounts because you will get punished. Oh, and it is based on your MAGI from 2 years ago. So you were probably earning the most as you approach retirement. The latest increase YOY for the brackets was 1.89%. The penalty increased over 9%.

Government takes WAY TOO MUCH OF OUR ****ING MONEY.

IRMAA is absolutely the most insidious thing the government has come up with since the Alternative Minimum tax.

2025 Tariff Revenue Collected: $264.05 billion

2024 Total Personal Income Tax Collected: $2.4 trillion

There will never be a situation where tariff taxation can replace personal income tax.
It used to work but revenue isn’t the reason the income tax will never be abolished. The government will never give up the control over behavior the income tax gives them.

Just saw this. I thought we talked about this? I agree with you but have you ever sat down and looked at the piecewise linear payout curve on SS benefits? Yes paying for healthcare according to means testing is complete BS. My work actually put that in the last handle of years. It went over as expected to a bunch of Texans both Dem and Repub. As bad as IRMAA is I can assure you as a high earner you getting stolen blind on your SS annuity.
