Trade Wars and Tariffs

My sister's been laid off from her dream job. Just worked her way up to VP of a medical device company. They moved all their manufacturing out of China from the Trump I tariffs, except their microchips. $50m in tariffs on those has become $300m and she's out of a job. Just bought a house in an expensive market, too. Passed up on an opportunity as controller for an NFL team to do this.

My company does some manufacturing in China. Was a big part of our plan for our future. All Trump guys in our senior mgmt. Wonder what they're conceding at this point?

Trump's playing with countless people's lives for no reason at all.

Sorry to hear that. The MAGA crowd is much better served being the dog that chases the car. MAGA doesn't know how to govern, just like the dog doesn't know what to do when it catches the crowd.

Grievance politics is no way to govern.

why doesn't the US refuse to make good on the US bonds China is selling off in an attempt to negatively effect the US?

not refuse to pay but just deduct out 50 miilion dollars a day from what China already owes while continuing to make good on all other bonds issued around the world.
To show that the US can and will attach post-sale conditions on bonds on a whim, will of course do wonders for the bond market, both long and short term.

Rinse, repeat.

So were now NOT tariffing completed phone, computers and other fully assembled electronics from China, but ARE still tariffing Chinese components used by American manufacturers. And this is supposed to boost American manufacturing. They're absolute clowns.

Also textiles. The re-shoring of high-paying sock sowing jobs continues unabated (at least until next week).

Yeah, but Trump's become the boy who cried wolf on tariffs. He puts them on, markets react, and he backtracks quicker than Melania goes dry when Donny disrobes. All this is doing is discouraging investment in the US because we're led by a mercurial madman.
😂

😂 You act like that is unique to Trump.

Your defense is that he's not the only who has ever used tariffs, I suppose? Cool point. I guess you find solidarity in the fact that other idiots do the same thing as you, but that is not a defense of anything worthy of defending. It's pathetic.

145% tariffs on China are not unique to Trump? There has never been a trade climate like this in my 43 years. We're waging trade war on the entire world. This is all very unique. When I was born, Ronald Reagan was president. He remembered being a young man the last time dumb fkn idiots in the government thought they could centrally plan the economy through tariffs, and Reagan thankfully avoided protectionism as we bounced back in the 80's. You're defending a fkn idiot who doesn't understand anything about macroeconomics. You're responding with laugh emojis to a post where I shared something personally painful to me. Of course you love Trump. Because, solidarity.

Occam's razor

In practice the things discussed in the thread are happening, but Trump really does believe that tariffs ought to bring back manufacturing. He just has a hard time stomaching the inevitable bad news that the higher rates will bring. (despite all the tough guy bluster)
