Total Solar Eclipse - August 21, 2017

You can view a TOTAL eclipse with the naked eye if and only if you are in the path of totality and you only view it within the short period of time that the moon is COMPLETELY blocking the sun. Before and after that you must be wearing protective eye glasses. If you doubt yourself or the timing then keep them on the entire time.

Coug is correct and during totality you will be able to see sun flares coming off the side of the sun while the moon is in front of it.

Coug, any suggestions as to how to photograph the eclipse? Don't want to spend huge money on lens filter etc. I think the camera is a Canon 70D. Not into photography, so not sure.

It's a new thing for me. Ideally I'd like to set up one camera to get a full length video of the eclipse and use another camera to take single shots inbetween. I have come across a few sites giving suggestions on photographing a solar eclipse. Several say that you can do this fairly successfully with an average digital camera, cell phones included. You're going to have to use the safety glasses to aim and shoot photos outside of totality especially if you are using a view finder as opposed to the LCD. The 70D is no shabby camera either, you can do a lot with that equipment. One site I found will give you ISO settings to play with as well.

Here's my first way too early eclipse forecast:

For East TN: A cold front will move through the area Sunday night, so it looks like it will be partly cloudy on the 21st.

Thanks. It seems like all the filters are too expensive and/or already sold out (back ordered) anyway. Interesting information though, TO will enjoy reading it, but he is going to be disappointed 😞. He's trying to get me to build a filter out of eclipse glasses:eek:hmy:!

Update on the eclipse weather for East TN:

The good news as of now is there are no fronts moving through on Monday, so it will be partly cloudy for most with isolated to scattered storms possible in some areas. As of now, it looks like it will be a typical summer day.

One of the local parks here where I live in Georgia is holding a watch party, and calling it "total eclipse of the park". Every time we drive by a sign for it, I start singing it like total eclipse of the heart. My wife and kids are ready for it to be over. Ha

My wife just went to the pharmacy, and our pharmacist gave her those glasses. She told her to poke a hole in mine if I talk smack about Georgia. Haha

Eclipse Weather update for East TN:

The models continue to trend drier on Monday. With high pressure in place and weak wind shear, chances will only be between 10-20% chance for a few isolated storms, mainly over the higher elevation areas. Also, once the eclipse begins, any cloud cover will diminish.

I wish I had bought 10k pairs of glasses a few months back. Could have made 100 grand on a 10k investment.

We were looking online at work last night, and people have them listed for up to $100 a pair! I told my wife I was gonna stand in the interstate Monday morning with a sign, and sale our 5 for $100 a pop!

I've been telling my students that if they don't have a pair of glasses to use a pinhole viewer. Literally will see the same thing. Until the last few seconds with the diamond ring and Baily's beads. You can't see that with a pinhole viewer
