Total Misconception about recruits!

Total misconception. It is a huge mistake to think there is a great deal of difference between Conference USA and SEC recruits. All you have to do is look at how many major conference schools were taken down by mid majors in the NCAA tournament. You take Southern Mississippi, Louisiana Tech, Tulsa, and Middle Tennessee (all 13-3 in conference) and pair them with the top four teams in the SEC - Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, and Tennessee by putting in a hat and drawing the pairing and Conference USA wins 1 or 2. If you pair them with the bottom four in the SEC, they win 3 of 4.
Let me make it a little simpler. Basketball teams have 14 players as opposed to football. That's a hell of a lot of talent to pick over. Some people are acting like USM recruits are inferior to SEC recruits. Tell that to the leading scorer in the conference and Missouri. Tell that to Mercer who came into Thompson Boling and beat Tennessee last year and followed that up with a victory over Duke in the NCAA this year (they play with ETSU). Tell that to Wichita State. You catch my drift! Never think that Coach T can not solidify his roster with his USM recruits if they choose to come.
(PS, being an ETSU grad, have to throw in that the Bucs swept the Vols in a home and home baseball series this year.So much for mid majors not having any talent on a level with the SEC.)

You're absolutely right. I mean even when you compare teams within the SEC, Tennessee has basically the same team as Kentucky. :pilot:

People! All this talk about mid-major vs major talent etc is missing one critical point (hashed out in many other threads, I'm sure.

CCM had a potential 1st round NBA draft pick (for three years) and two, count 'em, TWO first-team all SEC players this season. What did he manage to do with that "major" talent? On the bubble and a play-in bid to The Dance, this season. Two early NIT exits previously. That doesn't cut it.

Sure - Sweet 16! But the reality is, we beat a not very good team to play-in, spanked our "1st round" opponent (kudos, CCM) and got lucky to have a weak Cinderella opponent in round 2. Team also played great against U of M, but it's too little too late.

Anxious to see what Tenndall can do with talent, any level of talent. CCM underutilized his for the entire 3-year tenure.

I respectfully disagree with you. How many Mercer, So Miss, MTSU players are in the NBA? How many UK, FLA & TENN players are in the NBA? The talent level is FAR superior in the SEC versus CUSA. CUSA reminds me of a game of 52 card pick up- a mess of teams that change conferences yearly. You never even know what teams will comprise CUSA a year from now.

CDT had a for sure NBA lottery pick and didn't get a bid 2 of his years. He should have had four bids I guess. It should have been easy with a NBA player to dominate the OVC by your thinking.

So DT had a player more talented than anone on this last squad already. Do some research.

And its Tyndall.

I think that proves BTO's point. What did Mercer beat Duke by, and what did UTK beat Mercer by?

UTK wasn't much better (if any better) than that Duke squad, but Mercer could jump up and get anyone on any given day. However, if they played Duke 10 more times they probably lose 9 or 10 of them.

It's not about one game in particular, it's the probabilities over 18 games. That's where the talent gap shows itself.

They've also beaten Ole Miss, Bama and played Texas within 3 the last two years. They jump up and get a lot of BCS level teams quite often.

His point is directed at JUCO's and you know it. He didn't imply every recruit CDT has is a JUCO. You're just an ass who likes to argue semantics for the sake of arguing and being an ass.

What the heck in the OP says JUCOs? It appeared to me he was saying c-USA recruits in general?

They're also in a one-bid league. You conveniently gloss over details that would drastically change the premise of your point. Mercer can go 16-0 in the A-Sun and lose in the conference tourney and they're not getting in. Ask your boy Cuonzo what's its like to dominate the conference regular season and not get in.

You should probably slow down on your post count and give your points more thought before rushing to make your post ASAP. You wouldn't have to twisty, reach and backpedal so much to support your stance.

Great point. How many times did Mercer do that?

The difference in recruits between most mid majors and most high conference guys is huge. The mid major teams usually have 1 or 2 guys that play well above their recruiting rankings (develop late) and could play big minutes and high majors. The biggest difference, and the reason there are upsets in the tourney so often, is because those mid to small majors have players that stick around for years together.

This sounds like someone who just doesn't like the coach. Had this been a Pearl team, it would be spun differently.

Pearl had Tobias Harris AND Scotty Hopson and got his butt kicked. So . . .

Meanwhile, and I'm tired of beating a dead horse here, CCM had a team that took some very close, tough, bad luck losses. Is CCM a worse coach because some crappy shooter from A&M knocks down two prayer threes?

C'mon!

Therefore, this is a guy who doesn't like Martin. :mf_surrender:

Over the past three years they've beaten:
Seton Hall
Ole Miss
Duke
Alabama
Tennessee
Georgia Tech

Seems pretty good, until you consider that they're 6-10 against "high major" schools in that period and also have losses to:

North Florida (swept in one season)
Evansville
USC Upstate
Illinois Chicago
Jacksonville
Northern Kentucky

Not an impressive stretch for anything other than an ASun team.

What does that prove? I don't get your point.
It was in response to "Winning one game and competing for a whole conference season and post season are different things. There is a huge difference." Those mid-majors played whole conference seasons, too, beating a lot of majors in the process!

But their records would be horrible if they played in a good conference. They have good records playing a big school here and there but they can't do it for 20 games. The big schools would maybe lose 1 league game if the schedules were reversed. UT would have lost only 2 or 3 games playing their schedules.

Watching firsthand as Mercer has beaten Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss, Seton Hall, FSU, Ga Tech, Texas and Duke the past couple of years has changed my entire outlook as far as the talent gap goes.

Absotutely!!!! :hi:

Really? The below seems to indicate a substantial difference between SEC and C-USA. 57 SEC players from 11 SEC schools in NBA v 5 C-USA players from 5 C-USA schools. Seems like a huge difference to me. Only the ACC has more players than the SEC in the NBA.

How many of them made it to the elite 8 or final 4 in the last 10 years, I have not look back that far yet because I think the answer is 0.:eek:hmy:
