Total AP Poll Appearances 1990's
![]()
We were in the AP poll 158 times out of 169 with an average rank of 8th. That's pretty good.
Total AP Poll Appearances 2000's
![]()
In the 2000's we have been a part of the AP poll 107 times out of 132 polls.
Thoughts??
I don't know what it all means, but it is interesting.
Being a fan for over 4 decades I can remember some very lean years prior to CPF and crew when a top 20 finish was a "good year." I can also remember when J. Majors became head coach I wrote a lot of checks with my mouth about UT football that my rear end could not cash. I used to keep a yearly tab on rankings and records but have not looked back to 70's and 80's...what were our totals then?

Ain't it the truth. Whenever I hear people saying they want us to get back to playing "Tennessee Football" I think of the whole picture since I paid any attention (Battle-era till now). The truth is, we are currently playing "Tennessee Football"!
6 losses here, 4 losses there.......bowl appearance at the Chik Bowl......

Go to the Dickey era and Battle's first 4 years was not that bad....with Dickey's recruits....We played no football for about 7 years the first of the Major's Era..
85 put us back on the map. resurfaced in 88 90. that I think is what most are talking about....
no need. I could have done it myself, but the decline over the best 5-7 years would stick out like a sore thumb, especially the NR years.I'm working on it going back to 1960.
I'll plot total wins as a % of total games played to even out the different # of games played per season.
I'll also plot AP ranking (for years we hit top 25).
What I'm saying is that the ups and downs of the past are somehow discounted to say that the overall trend was good/great whatever. Somehow, the downs of the 2000's don't get the same treatment.
From the 60's on, the pattern is remarkably the same. There are stretches of good years (2 or less losses and Top 10 finishes) and down years.
The long view shows that the Vols since the 98 championship have been about what the Vols were before it.
This team's performance in the 80's would be par for the course and would yield an SEC Championship (Fulmer's 4th under the pre-SECCG rules).
I'm not arguing that Fulmer is the greatest but rather that the long-view of UT football (at least back 40-50 years) shows us to be pretty much where we've always been.
