Both Woody Hayes and Paterno were automatic firings. Paterno was absolutely a tragic mess. Hayes, not so much
One interesting thing to me about Woody Hayes is that him punching the Clemson player and getting fired immediately after isn't like the 1st or 2nd thing that comes to mind when you think of him.

He obviously was an incredible coach, but the way he went out didn't damage his legacy as much as you think it would.

I think that's because everyone always knew he was a great coach but also knew he was a top shelf ******* too

I don't remember everything involved but Franklin leaving Vanderbilt wasn't on great terms, was it?
The relationship between him and the school was fine. It was more how he handled rape allegations made against several football players, 3 of whom were found guilty.

Pruitt + all the AD shenanigans has to be top of the list in my opinion.
Definitely. Firing a head coach for recruiting violations and then the AD immediately hiring his buddy to be the head coach for two weeks wasn't a good look.

True. Neither was that same clueless AD waddling up to the mike and saying how good recruiting was going a good look.

The whole Fulmer-Back-On-The-UT-Teat and Pruitt-McDonald's-Bag era was just horrible.

I'd put Kiffin down for three, Tennessee, USC and Ole Miss, leaving a head coach at the airport may be justified and fully deserved, but the Trojans have been lost in the wilderness since, with great players, NFL draft choices, but very little in the form of titles, big wins or bowl appearances.

The relationship at LSU is a ticking time bomb and will go off at some point on time.
Some of you have a Kiffin fascination. Yes the Tn exit was a mess. What was wrong with leaving OM for LSU?

Pruitt's exit was messier than Kiffin's because the Pruitt firing was complicated and damaging to the football program for several seasons after. It was dragged out in the media and NCAA proceedings. It also puts the spotlight on how much more important the next hire is than the messy exit that just happened. Pruitt's exit handicapped our next staff in real measurable terms, but the next hire just happened to be a really good one and we recovered this time.

I was as fighting mad as anyone when he left, but Kiffin's exit was a disaster going forward because Dooley was the AD's solution to the crisis. Dooley scrabbled together a decent recruiting class that first signing day. Hard to imagine many coaches doing better. Too bad he peaked so early.
Butch's and Cornbread's hires just prolonged the seeming agony of Kiffin's midnight ride out of town.
... and send them real estate catalogues for Baton Rouge - or Caracas.

That made me laugh out loud. Thank you.

Kiffin will always be a pre-madonna POS
Hope ole miss somehow wins it all, and watch him take credit. If somehow ole miss was to win it I hope people blow up his Twitter with the best memes.

He was trying to recover from losing to SC and Ark after we already beat several top teams during his absence.
I was 5 in the 1992 season so I don't remember, but I imagine losing to both of the new members of the SEC that year, particularly when neither one of them was any good, probably sealed his fate.

That Arky team came into the game with us that year 1-4 and upset us at home when we were #4. They finished 3-7-1. Big yikes.
