To me, I look at like the NFL model.

HS recruiting and signing day is the draft...thats where you are building the biggest part of your team and your future.

The portal is Free Agency...thats where you are going to get that two or three pieces in an area of need to bump you up to a contender.
That’s a good analogy for it. It’s also kinda like the Wild West in that there are fewer rules, restrictions, and oversight. I’m honestly not sure what to expect going forward. NIL and the portal have changed the landscape so much that there really is no normal right now, or so it seems to me.

100 percent agree !!!
Just like the NFL, there are going to eventually need to be rules and restrictions on both NIL and portal movements.

Absolutely, but I’m wondering how that would work or honestly how it might even happen. It’s not like the NFL where a group of owners can get together and negotiate with an agreed upon player’s union. This is a different animal, but I agree that something needs to be done to at the very least create some sort of guidelines going forward. I am just at a loss as to how we will ever get there.

These days, the transfer portal. 100%. When have we had success w 18 year olds? You pay them for 2 years and then they leave you before they get meaningful reps. IMO, we need to allocate a lot more money to getting some jr and sr guys that can contribute Day 1.
That's why alot of teams have depth problems

Impressive haul for this staff. I was concerned they were going to miss out on a few, as in years past, but they've proved me wrong.

Congrats to CJH and the rest of the staff.

Agree but, now comes the hard part. Keeping them focused on UT and showing up on campus.

I'm loving the fact that we are recruiting so heavily on defense while cherry picking the best offensive stars. 18 defensive guys and 10 offensive stars. Would like to see the caliber of the defensive recruiting step up next year. Maybe they plan on getting some hosses in the portal.

Looks like we’ve got some good recruits to drive Heupels car. Now the question is will we be able to turn left at “Don’t Lose to Vandy at Home Rd” next time.

Looks like Ole Miss (#26) and Vandy (#33) are going to continue to buy their teams out of the portal. It’ll be interesting to see if our high school kids can compete with their professionals. Their approach worked much better than ours this year. Buying experienced players may allow those schools to avoid down years while young players are maturing. My biggest concern now is about who we lose in the portal. I would think Staley is very marketable

The value of this is very little. All these players will be standing on the sidelines and not contributing to anything. Some will transfer out for more money or decide to hang around and then transfer

What this thread shows is how messed up college football is now. We just pulled in the number one class in the SEC and right with OSU and we can’t even all be excited because of the transfer portal rules now.

The ones mentioning portal have valid concerns but damn this is an amazing class.

I will say we haven’t really lost a huge player to the portal yet. Everyone who has left has bombed out elsewhere so I think we can keep the ones we want.
