You must not have been there. Vols #5 and Gators #9 and I think both were undefeated. Vols up 7-3 at the half and then blew it open in 3rd Qtr.

Of course, I'd rather stomp a mudhole in a big rival than play poorly early, get behind and then storm back at the end. The 90 UF game was much enjoyable to the Vols fans!!

I was only 10. But that Arkansas game was magical moment of that season. Yes, it probably should be on my list, now that I think about it. But it does not top Arkansas.

There are 3 or 4 Bama games missing from your list.:)

I would say the 2013 South Carolina game (like you have in your list) is one of the biggest in recent memory. Butch taking down a Top 5 team in his first year was huge and probably had an impact on where our recruiting has finished these past two years. It undoubtedly set the tone for his coaching career. He needs more wins like those now in order to back everything up that he has done on the recruiting trail.

Kelly Washington Record setting win vs. LSU. That was big, 1998 we beat UAB, and others lost and then we took over the #1 ranking and held it for the rest or the year. GO VOLS! WIN em ALL!

I would put the 1995 Georgia win over the 09 version.

The 82' Bammer game against the Bear and Walter Lewis at Quarterback for the Tide. I think it was 35-27 Vols!

I don't recall the significance of the Cal game other than we stomped them. Were they highly ranked or something?

^^ Weren't we expected to win versus Cal?

Heh. The Cal game opened the 2006 season. In 2005, Tennessee had their first losing season (5-6) under Phil Fulmer, and their first since 1988. That means the student body really had no memory of Tennessee ever missing a bowl game.

Also, we were ranked #3 in the AP pre-season poll in 2005, so it was a devastating year.

So yes, in 2006 Cal was heavily favored. They came into the game ranked #9, and Tennessee had not beaten a top-10 team at home in Neyland since 2000.

So this game was a huge relief, because at the time, we weren't sure if a losing record was just a random bump in the road, or if 2005 was the start of a decade of misery.

All of those are good but I have to agree with the other posters. I have to rank the 90 game up there.

I'm having a difficult time asking this because I'm afraid this will be misunderstood.

Everyone enjoys a good butt whipping. No question about that. No question it was also a butt whipping.

But, at the time in October of 1990, was a win over Florida that big of a deal?

I know that over the years a hatred has been built to the point where some would argue they hate Florida more than Alabama.

But, how many people cared in 1990? Or was it enjoyable in the same way that beating Ole Miss 55-13 in 1987 was enjoyable?

The reason I believe and think this is probably correct for those of us who consider it big is because it was a prime match up between two highly ranked teams and then Tennessee blew the lid off. That game showed that not only were we good but were very good to score that many points on another good team. Plus, you have to add in the fact that Florida was back and in a big way plus Spurrior was coaching. Even then I knew it was a big deal and more so from 92-98 when we couldn't beat Fla.

I thought they (Florida) were a better football team than what they were in previous years and then the Tennessee game happened. After that, while it was much more fun to watch, I wasn't sure anything was really all that different.

That changed on 11/3/90 and 11/10/90.

99,

I was FR at UT that season and it was a big deal because it was Homecoming (Cheers to 100 Years of Volunteers) and UF was 1 of those teams UT didn't play regularly but their new coach (Spurrier) had success against UT when he was at Duke.
