Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Merged )

Or, DW may have had a “Oh Crap!” Moment and come in strong to resolve some of the challenges to keeping TV.

DW better at least make the type of offer that if TV leaves, everyone says, “Well, there was just nothing that would have kept him.”

Anything short of that, and there is no excuse for letting the most noteworthy coach at the University go elsewhere.

That could be true as well. And I agree, you gotta go all in on this one.

I think we need to have an understanding with regard to all this talk about loyalty. Coaches are selling their product, their sport, and their team to get people to show up. They are going to give great speeches laced with words like loyalty, commitment, dedication, teamwork, etc. We all believe in loyalty to Tennessee because we either grew up in the area as a Tennessee fan, we picked Tennessee as our college of choice or came to it by another way as a fan.

At the end of the day, on the coaching side of things, this is nothing more than just another business. Coaches, managers, executives, athletic directors, and so on will either take a better opportunity and leave, get relieved of their duties for lack of performance or stay because they enjoy where they are and it’s a good situation for all involved. All three are business decisions by one entity or another, be it the employee or the employer. I don’t expect a coach that never played here or went to school here to have the same loyalty as fans/students/alumni.

Technically, they are in the business world, and they are making a business decision. I believe Tony was completely committed to this job, performed extremely well and put us on the college baseball map in winning a national championship. He did his job, he did what he was asked to do and did it very well. It’s personal to us, but there’s not a one of us on this board that wouldn’t take better pay, a better job or a challenge that we have looked forward to pursuing if it presented itself within our own profession.
I don’t like it, but I agree. This just has not been handled very well by the parties involved. For some reason, this leak to the media, I can’t imagine, came from the Vol side of things. With the biggest FB game of the season happening today? Nah. This came from a media leak on the Giants and SF media or Tony’s agent. I don’t think Tony would approve esp with having practice today. His players must really be perturbed with the “games” being played today-I would be,

Maybe, five years down the road it will be difficult to catch lightning in a bottle after you've been away from the college game for an extended period. Lord knows what the college game will look like in 5 years.
Let's hope he has a change of heart and stays.
If not best wishes VFL Tony 👍
Agree. He’d be 53… 5 years out of the college game is an eternity. The recruits would have no clue who he was. He’s in his prime right now and will likely never have as much relevance in the college game as what he has right now. Conversely, he’s probably telling himself this is likely his only chance to make this move up. Is his story driven by reaching the ranks of the MLB or building a dynasty in college ball? Can’t fault either but I guess we will find out soon.

I don’t blame him. But it stings because he always said he was all in on UT. We spent a lot of money on upgrades at LNS that he requested
He is all in on UT . When you have a chance to reach the pinnacle of what ever profession you are in you have to at least consider it. We all want Tony to stay but I can’t harbor any ill will towards Tony or anyone else who strives to be at the top of their profession.

Do we know if Frank Anderson is going with him? TV is obviously irreplaceable but I kinda feel like Frank was the secret sauce.
I doubt CFA wants to travel like MLB demands at this point. Perhaps if it was a TX team near his home, but my guess is no…. He either retires or stays at TN as the #2 under Coach Elander if CTV leaves.

I’m with you. I don’t like how this has unfolded. Seems like it might’ve been unfair to Tony and Tennessee by whoever leaked it.

TN baseball is at a great place now thanks to TV. There isn’t a reason this program cnet continue its success.

Go Vols!
Amen!

Even if TV leaves, we’ve still got Prostates! Carla! and @Proud Army Wife !

Not to mention,
Strechhhhhh…..Peeee…..Beeeeeerrr!

We ain’t done yet!

Edit: @vol66, you out there, buddy? Haven’t seen you in a couple weeks.

I say this with all due respect. I think Coach Elander is a terrific #2 guy. I don’t see him as having the outgoing personality to deal with the requirements and demands of being the #1 guy at an SEC school. I hope I’m wrong but have felt that way for a long time. With that said, I wouldn’t want anyone else as my #2 coach than Coach Elander. He doesn’t like the limelight and I respect that, but it’s impossible to avoid as the #1 coach.
But if you don't promote Elander he probably is gone ...new Head Coaches from outside the family usually bring their own staff ...

Same. I’m not saying it’s the sole reason but their relationship is certainly strained. The pull of the Giants and being the first college coach to get the gig is probably too much for normal folks to turn down. CTV isn’t normal. With that said, CTV and Danny White couldn’t be more different. White is a stiff, introverted administrator. CTV is an extroverted free spirit who wants to feel fully supported by his AD, and naturally given the tools to go to Omaha. I don’t think he gets that 100% from Danny White. Plus, I bet TN isn’t in the top 5 of NIL money in baseball in the SEC. That fact alone has to tick off CTV. Maybe Randy Boyd will step in and save the day!
If the relationship is strained, would White give Elander anything more than a token interview? With his ties to Vitello, I'd question if he's a serious candidate if he's a candidate at all.

Danny isn’t letting HIS hire not have all the financial advantages. He takes great pride (as well he should) on his hiring decisions as an AD, and will not allow the LV basketball program to fail.
While I can understand that, Vitello is a unicorn. I'd bet it all that White won't come anywhere close to finding another Vitello. Then again I'm not sure he'd care.

If he is gone he's gone. He already made us relevant in the sport, eyed by all recruits nationally and left a loaded team on the field. Promote within and move on.
We're it that easy. This isn't LSU. Vitello IS the program. Delmonico had his years, but no one has done more or gone higher than Vitello in our program. He's simply not replaceable IMO.

Yeah man. Driving a VW Bettle. You probably drove by where it a time or two as well.

Thanks for sharing Hoss. I can't believe I never knew about this. One of my biggest fears is getting hit by a train. When I was little I saw a Semi get hit by one and it traumatized me. It's burned into my mind. No one was killed thank God
