Tonight revealed one thing…

I am not sure if Heupel will become an elite coach but he has a great offensive mind. If he can build a solid defense, then we should win a lot of games and contend for the SECE. Time will tell whether or not that will happen. The roster needs upgrades in every single unit. I hate to bring up Kiffin but the level of excitement is on par with the 2009 season when we finished 7-6. Heupel wants to be here unlike Lane though.

Whine, whine, whine. Our Vols aren't boring, whatever else you may be inclined to call them. Get a halfway decent defense and our team kicks serious big time booty. A defense that's neither short-handed nor loaded with 3rd string level players. Albeit, they played mostly above their level. Get even a semi-quality defense, and I think many teams would rather play somebody else than the Vols. MEANWHILE, rather than whine, thank the boys for getting us as far as they did against all the odds arrayed against them. Go Vols!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heupel still has a long way to go before he is an elite coach. I like Heupel, and he has done some good things this year, however, he should have never been considered for Coach of the Year.

The final possession of tonight’s game proved my point. Benefit of the doubt - Hooker just forgot that we could actually kick a field goal. No idea what that whole last series during regulation was about.

Should have never went to OT.

are there people that thought he was an elite coach? those kind are few and far between.

What it revealed to me is what miracle workers this staff were this season. To get us to 7 wins with this roster was amazing. Not enough to win COY. That belongs to Beamer IMO. Still, the talent level on this roster is cringe worthy. They do, however, have a lot of heart and desire which the staff drew out of them. It was a disappointing end to a season that I didn't see coming to be honest. Now we just need to get some real dogs on this roster for next season. If I'm Heupel and co, I live in the damned portal the rest of the way.

We went from the beginning of the season saying just get to a bowl game to finishing the season and having a complete melt down online. Purdue isn’t great but they did beat two top 5 teams and the refs clearly had it out for us with the missed hold and obvious touchdown at the end of the game.

It is what it is, clearly we’re trending up and anyone paying attention knew this was going to be a building year, no matter what way you shake it.

We’ll learn a lot more next year and the Pitt and Florida games look like early indicators of what we can expect.

Are we really blaming the offense/play calling in a game where we had 666 total yards and scored 45 points? I've been a fan of Vol football for 40 years and can't remember us ever having over 350 yards passing and more than 250 yards rushing in the same game.... and still lose.
And won the turnovers

Our Secondary looked like Key Stone Cops. I'm not sure I have ever seen a worst Vol Secondary before. Not gonna blame the REFS when our cornerbacks gave up so many big plays.

I have to say I don't want to hear any more about who didn't play for whatever team. We wereissimg our top CB, OL, and RB due to opt out, transfer, and injury(maybe opting out). Every team deals with such things.

this team was so much better than last years just think what they could have been if all the defence players had stayed.

Two things were revealed…we need elite defensive players badly and lots of them, and we do not have an offensive line that can move most defenses off the line on short yardage. Heupel is not going to stop running up the middle. He’s done it every game against better D’s that stuffed our run ever time. Weight room, steroids and protein shakes! Let’s get busy!

Play calling down the stretch was horrible. Absolutely horrible. Why we threw long passes when we needed 10 yards to get solidly in FG range I’ll never understand

I said it all year, his aversion to calling timeouts at end of halves to preserve time and set up plays would cost us. 'His offense works on speed, keeps them off balance" everyone said. How'd that work out last night?

And, once again, in this thread, we are not talking about being appeased, firing coaches, or transfer portals. We are not talking about overachieving or underperforming players. We are talking about the last series of regulation being mishandled on every level. If Heupel does not fix his close/late game management skills, we are going to lose more games that should be wins. Anyone with a pulse can see this needs to be addressed in his coaching. Does it mean I don’t think he is the guy? No. I like him and want him to succeed.

Now, you have the right to choose whatever forum you would like to feel superior in, but forum choice will not change your football IQ.

Knuckledragger still comes to mind. When 90 freakin points are scored in regulation, there are all kinds of whoulda, coulda and shoulda scenarios. Why wasnt 87's forward progress stopped but our guys was? We missed #2 on defense. Anybody with a semblance of a football IQ could see that Purdue picked on the weakest link in the secondary all game long. Second guessing playcalling 45 points into it is kind of silly. We are still 30 players short of a roster and you can make these nonsensical comments because you're a fan. This team overachieved, but whatever. It doesn't take much to feel superior in this room. Common sense should lead the day.

Tennessee has NO defense!!!

100000% agree on 87 on their team. He was stood up and engaged with 2 UT defenders. His forward progress was completely stopped. There is NO WAY a college DB can take that dude down that wouldn't result in a penalty of some kind.

This is why it's so infuriating... defenders are terrified to hit and a guy that barely scratches 200lb would have to make a questionable hit in today's game to take down a guy that has 6" and 60lbs on him.

We got to have a more physical running game to go with rest of the package. Our O-line has to get a lot better at run blocking especially in short yardage and hopefully Williams gives us a more physical bigger running back. The Bama’s and Georgia’s have power running games to go with their fast paced game. Our O-line must get tougher and we need a power back. Hopefully Willians is the man. GBO!

He didn’t kick the field goal because he thought his defense wouldn’t be able to stop them hell they didn’t stop them the whole game so that’s why he went for the touchdown
Our defense was gassed. Actually played pretty good at the end to force three and out but you are absolutely correct. I felt we CLEARLY needed a TD in OT and a field goal would not win it. CJH knows what he’s doing for sure.

What a bunch of wussies. Tennessee won that game. Two obvious bad calls lost that game or the chance to win it. All this hindsight is a bunch of BS.

I am more critical of the personnel usage. Needed 1 yard and we left a 230lbs back off the field and ran our smallest back.
