Tommy Thigpen Rumor

this thread is based on literally nothing but the goofball who started it

Not so sure by looking at the UNC boards. Apparently Thig was a S/CB coach under Chizik and ofcourse he was one hell of a linebacker at UNC. It has legs, I just hope Butch takes care of buisness and keeps him here!

Not up to him. Oh sure he'll lobby to Dave Hart on Thigpens behalf but ultimately it's Harts decision.

Our assistant salary pool will probably get a nice boost now that the season is over. Thig coached under Chizik at Auburn. His tenure there didn't go very well and UNC is a much weaker program. I doubt this goes anywhere. Thigpen is a recruiter first and he's already pretty invested in developing the program at Tennessee.

He shouldn't go. He would be put into a higher tax bracket and the raise just would go to Uncle Sam..and he would have state taxes. Heck he might lose money...

Truth. I've heard the taxes in NC are ridiculously high.

Point is, if your numbers are correct, our coordinators will make the same amount as UNC is reported to offer Thig. There's just no way a LB coach is gonna make as much or more here as a coordinator. What other title is there besides recruiting coordinator(Azzanni) that we could give him? Assistant head coach? Honest question?

Don't ever doubt Butch for coming up with a catchy slogan or in this case title. No seriously I agree with you I don't know what other title they could give Thig other maybe co-defensive coordinator but that's not going to happen. Not to get anything else started cause I know nothing but Jan-March is when there is typically a lot of assistant coaching moves. Maybe Azzanni gets hired away hope not but anything is possible. Vol fans need to come to terms with the fact that with success comes other schools wanting our coaches. They aren't always going to say no and some will leave. If Thig leaves it would suck but we have other great recruiters on this staff. That said the administration is going to have to loosen the strings with all the upward salaries we're seeing.

Am I the only one who thinks it's almost laughable unc would pay that much for a position coach. The figures seem to hamper it's validity but maybe I'm just ignorant

If UNC does make an offer to Thig in the 500K range it will be as recruiting coordinator/position coach.

Yes...I don't blame UT for being cheap, a lot of $$$ got dished out in the Kiffin affair. I think we payed $1.2m for Monte Kiffin among others...

Kiffin had to pay Tennessee to leave. We did have to pay Dooley about 5M and Sunseri over 1M though. Monte did make 1.2 million for the year he was here which was crazy money at the time but that isn't much above average for SEC coordinators now.

This isn't a coincidence. We've raided the Carolinas in the last 3 years, and I mean raided: North, Scott, Tuttle. But correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Thig focus on the Nashville area with clean up duty for the elite guys?

This is a recruiting assassination attempt. Fedora is trying to kill our momentum and take our strongest guy. Well played Fedora. Well played. Let's see how Butch responds. Thigpen to Butch is Garner to Fulmer. We can't afford to lose Thigpen for a lateral move, even if it's his alma mater.

Go to UNC and watch Tennessee take all of your top recruits like previous years.

on a previous thread, I relayed info from a Raleigh friend that showed of top 20 NC recruits in 2013, 8 remained in-state schools and 2 were recruited by TN (10% share).

Like any other claim to state dominancy, have to get the high school pipeline going. In Northern Ohio, where I live, Meyer has the tight relationship with the Cleveland high school that turns out a steady pipeline to OSU. They are now turning around the southern OH area as well that used to be automatic pipeline to Michigan.

Those contiguous states can be gold mines.

Living in Carolina and seeing all that sickly carolina blue every day and en masse on game day is enough to make you puke. And yes, the taxes stink.

Top programs are paying big money to coordinators and recruiters. Tennessee gonna have to step up if they want to compete.

This. People don't understand that you have that one big time recruiter that is almost as important as a position coach. Thig is one of the best in the business and we haven't had a recruiter like him in a great while. It would be a huge set back to lose him.

Umm....Thigpen laid the groundwork for a pipeline into the Carolinas. There's a reason why UNC wants him. It takes a thorn out of their side and gets one of the best recruiters in the country on their staff.

Thig is the finisher on most high priority targets. Generally if we have someone that is on the fence and needs to be closed Butch goes and Thig is generally with him.

Kiffin's buyout was less than a million I think. Much less than Dooley or Butch I believe.

Thig is a great recruiter and all but surely they understand that top athletes aren't going to choose UNC over Tennessee, Alabama, Michigan, etc etc.. and that just because they hire him doesn't mean they'll get top 5 classes year after year.

It's a basketball school and everyone knows that. And IF they're actually willing to pay him $1.5 over 3 years, they're living in a dreamland. I personally believe the offer is 500k over 3 years, but that's only because it seems more realistic for the UNC football program. I really don't think Thig leaves for UNC anytime soon.

He's making 345k a year currently, 500k over three years would likely make him just laugh in their faces.

I just don't see UNC football shelling out that kind of money.

I don't either. UNC is cheap when it comes to football. Look at their assistant turnover as well. Fedora turned over more than half the staff he hired in 2012. UNC ranked dead last in assistant pay in the ACC in 2012 as well. No idea where they are at currently BUT I doubt it is competitive with us.

They just bumped the Asst coaches salary pool last month when Butch got his raise. Doubt they get another one anytime soon.
