I thought it got settled, Texas has the interlocking UT west of the Mississippi and Tennessee to the east...then they both stopped using the logo.

Do not be socked if Tennessee sends a cease and desist letter to Toledo. merchandise is a huge business.

Toledo has been using it for a while. If UT sent a C&D to Toledo they tossed it file 13.

Further copying that's been going on:

1) UT copied Yale's fight song
2) Tulane also has an interlocking UT
3) UGA and Texas play the same tune.
4) Bama and UF share a chant... The Go Gators thing
5) Multiple schools use the. "It's great to be a ___________" chant

I guess the Packers need to get pissed about UGA's logo

What's the origin of the Packers' 'G' logo?

The Packers have utilized a few different 'official' logos over the years, but only one, the current trademark 'G' logo, ever made it to the helmet. The year was 1961, Vince Lombardi's third as head coach. The logo was designed by Packers equipment manager Dad Braisher.

I see that the University of Georgia uses a similar 'G' logo. Who used the logo first?

The Packers 'G' logo was invented by Dad Braisher specifically for the Packers in 1961. Georgia began using a similar looking logo in 1964. According to Georgia's official website, head coach Vince Dooley "had been impressed with the look of the helmet worn by the Green Bay Packers, which featured the oval 'G' but in a different color scheme. Dooley settled on the black oval 'G' surrounded by a white oval background resting on each side of the bright red helmet. A white stripe was placed over the top." In 1996, Georgia then added a smaller black stripe inside the white stripe.

I read somewhere that Georgia paid the Green Bay Packers for the use of the logo for a period of time.

Some people might be surprised to find out that Tennessee is not the only college football team to use checkerboard endzones.

Texas may own copyright to their version/color. You can't have entire rights to a U and a T, but to theirs they can.

Actually, the University of Tennessee's UT is different. Ours has the T starting over the U and going under the U at the bottom. So two different designs. Tennessee is still known as UT and has been well before Texas was established.

I also like our UT logo that incorporates the outline of our state border like in my profile pic.

Toledo is going to be okay.

Looks like University of Texas' logo. :birgits_giggle:

This. So the best thing to happen would be for uTex to sue Toledo for copy write infringement and then lose. Then we could use it again if we wanted to, even though we won't because the Power T is glorious.

We don't use the logo on merchandise anymore.

The T first appeared on the helmet in 1964 under HC Doug Dickey . The T was redesigned in 1977 by Johnny Majors and the university trademarked it.

Look it up...for years Tennessee and Texas alternate the use of the logo!

That city gave us Chuck Webb. Their school can use our old logo.

Darn right. My family is from Toledo. Central Catholic High alums. Still visit in the summer. Toledo isn't the most desirable spot on the map, but it has plenty to offer. The Mud hens stadium is pretty cool. And...well...the zoo isn't bad.
