Tobe Awaka question

Arizona alum told me that in an interview with local media before this season stated he said his goals were focused on careers outside of basketball and as such academics were highest priority for him. Supposedly he felt Tennessee was not giving him enough support on that front and that’s why he left.

I trust the guy who told me this with my life. But I also told him that didn’t make sense given Barnes’ emphasis on academics. Just seems like Tobe had a lot going on and getting out of Knoxville was his best way to deal with it.

avg act to get in Arizona is 25 with a low of 21. This last year at UTK I believe it was 28 or 29 and a 21 will not be accepted.
I say this as it appears UTK is better academically than Arizona.

Please don't state that ACT score determines the basis of a University's Academic prowess.

Yep. And I took what was told to me as Awaka saying he didn’t have shared goals with Tennessee’s coaches and they showed little interest in prioritizing his academic goals above their basketball goals. It was in no way commentary about the academic prowess of either school.

Why wouldn’t it? You need to look at the top 50 schools and requirements to get in and it tells the story itself. Higher academic reputation schools have higher test scores and HS gpas from enrollees. An in state kid scoring a 25 on the ACT will probably not be accepted to UT but accepted to Arizona.
I’ve sent 3 to college and know many other parents so I have some knowledge. UTK isn’t the 18 ACT gets you in school anymore.
UTK currently ranks higher academically than Arizona, which again correlates with enrollment test scores.

His major at Tennessee was listed as Supply Chain Management, so he definitely didn't leave for a better academic program if he didn't change majors.

I’d like to know why Tobe Awaka ended up transferring to Arizona, he had improved substantially from freshman to sophomore years and I’m betting his game would have improved more here at UT vs at AZ. Just imagine if he had not transferred, both he and Carrey together would have been beasts on the court.

I wonder if Barnes wishes he had not transferred or was he glad to see him leave.
90% of the transfers are because the player signs with an agent. The agents want their players in the portal to find their true value. You hire an agent you do what he says. I don't know about this case but thats my guess.

Several issues compounded with Tobe. I know 100% that there were some issues with Jefferson and Carr regarding underage girls. I know of 2 separate incidents personally. To the best of my knowledge, Carr did nothing illegal. There was a rumor of a 3rd incident that involved an underage family member of a teammate. I do not know anything definitive about this, but if you connect the dots...
Ok well that makes sense why Barnes said there's the door. That's totally unacceptable and should have been handled by police and courts. Unreal.
