and anyone else to whom this might apply. I generally don't respond to fans who have negative things to say about Arian. There really is no need. But with this, there was a need...for me. Before you all go nuts and say "This is why parents shouldn't post on message boards!", understand this. I am not overly sensitive. I've endured a lot of verbal criticism about my son on this board and others and have said nothing. I'm ok with that. He's a high profile player at a very large university with a very passionate fan base. That's all good. I accept all of that.

I will not address the arrest incident because I know what happened. Arian should never have put himself in that position and he was wrong for that. He owned up to his responsibilities, took his punishment and moved on. We are not the type of people to dwell on past mistakes. We learn, we move on.

What I will address is his most recent interview. It seems that it was taken way out of proportion and apparently has caused a lot of question, concern and misunderstanding. Dude, this is where you come in. Arian was happy...thrilled....RELIEVED, if you will, with his progress during spring training. After the last season, the bowl game and all that he went through, he was relieved to finally see some positive out of all the work he's put in. Work you will never hear him brag about, but work he will continue to do when there are no eyes watching. He was pleased with his performance during the scrimmage, happy that spring ball was over and he could take a few days to relax. He was excited, had some adrenaline and he was JOKING about the alter ego. If you heard the radio interview of that, you could hear in his voice the levity. HE WAS JOKING. He's a little surprised at how it created so much attention.

And let me share with you a little about my son. He is a fun-loving kid who loves to laugh, has the greatest sense of humor and is a very passionate soul. IF you take the time to get to know him, you would see that he is a happy-go-lucky guy. Certainly NOT the kind of kid who is cocky or has a huge ego. I've worked his whole life to make sure that he is clear on who is his and what his path is. And ego is not in it to that degree. What he is is clear about his abilities to play ball and clear that that is only a portion of who he is and what he does. He is confident in his abilities and may appear cocky about his game but just knows himself and is comfortable with that.

This interview was all a joke. He did NOT change his name. And if you want to know the real truth, there are about 7 or 8 guys who have "alter-ego" name changes as well (most of whom none of you would consider cocky), but who have done this as a joke between themselves. Sure he shouldn't voice that publicly because those who can't recognize jokes must reduce it to much more than it truly is and then take it a step further to personal attacks on his character and his supposed "inability" to play ball in the SEC.

My son is not defined by you, his craft, any interview or any ONE thing he does. I know who he is, what his character is about, how he lives his life. He is neither perfect, nor does he try to be. He lives his life in that manner he choses. He does not belong to you and he does not belong to me. He is his own man. And I'm proud of that.

This is not pandering, I typically do not participate in such behavior, but for what it is worth I thought Arian's interview was hilarious.

Ten or fifteen years ago what happened to Arian would have been a non incident. The campus or local police would have taken him to the dorm and let him sleep it off.

Good post, Fostermom. If I can give you some advice - in general, never listen to the Dude. He has little to say that isn't negative. He has never come across as a nice person on these boards. Obviously, he could be an amazing person, but he doesn't project himself as such.

Don't listen to him, or to any of us, for that matter. :)

Thanks for such a reasoned response. I'm not sure I could do that after seeing my son criticized - even if it was anonymously on an internet message board.

We always appreciate your input.

WOW, great post and as a Vol may I say I think he is great at RB and glad he is on our side and not beating on our Def.

Agreed - thanks for reminding us that all these players are real people.

What a nice defense of a young man who clearly needs no defending. I know Arian's already immeasurably proud of his mom. May I be so presumptuous as to say I am too.

Thanks for standing your ground. And thanks for visiting with us as often as you do.

People are always going to judge someone in the spotlight and no matter what that person does will find something they don't like about that person (in this case Arian aka Spencer). I speak for most level headed people when I say I hope he has a great year and as much work as he and the team put into this sport I know last year was a million times harder on him than anyone could imagine. I would say 99% of people thought what he said was funny so don't worry about the others.

BTW he and the most of the guys from the team attended my church one sunday last fall and seemed like most were great guys. Like any group don't judge the whole on a few "bad apples".

That was well put. He is a good guy, hell he was my neighbor last semester. I'll vouch for him when anybody wants to question his personality. What he got in trouble for, like Lexvol said, would not have been a big deal 10 years ago. No one on here can say they haven't been in trouble for doing something dumb. He did man up and take responsibility.

He is a funny guy once you get to know him. He can quote Chappele show all day long. He also realizes he's not too shabby at football. But there is nothing wrong with that. I was in there when he said what he said. One reporter asked him where he thought the offense was after the scrimmage, he replied with "probably in the locker room" then laughed and answered it seriously.

You're a brave woman to read these boards. Thanks for posting, you should be proud to be the mother of such a fine young man. Best of luck to Arian, your family and all the other Vols this season.

No, he doesn't ever read these.....and doesn't think I should either. But I am a fan now...so I do it for the same reasons everyone else does. Plus, I'm grown. He can't tell me what to do! :nono:
No matter how big he gets he will always fear the MOM:aggressive:

I really hope you know that we really want him to do great this year and sometimes people get frustrated and just say dumb things. Those guys work so hard and we really appreciate that. We are proud to have him on our team and don't let a few "NegaVols" spoil the experience of being apart of such a great school.

thanks for the post Fostermom...err, Douglasmom:)

we have a tremendous fanbase, but like any other school in the country, we have our bad apples who would rather criticize and complain than enjoy our athletics.

I think I speak for most of us here when I say that Tennessee athletics is one big family, and in that sense Arian is a member of our family...we're proud of his hard work and all that he does to represent our university.

These are all youngsters - they deserve all the support we can give them. (I know, they are over 18, but still kids in my book...) Certainly, THEY want the win even more than we do! Good post, Mom! As a mom also, I'm with you.

Actually F/M I think Dude wa previously banned from this board and now goes by the new name Dude.So that tells you something right there. No response would be a better response.Your son is at a very high profile university where alot of fans hang on ever word that comes out of a UT football players mouth.Having 3 boys in college around Arians age, I see the point you are making but trust me it's really not necessary for those of us that can see and think outside of the box. Some people constantly look for things to ridicule.Volnation stands firmly behind the players, coaches, parents of all UT teams, there are just a few on here that enjoy going against the grain for ATTENTION'S SAKE!We look forward to a great year by Arian.

Considering the recent history of the football Vols, both on the field and off the field, I don't think any criticism of a Vol player is unwarranted. When I heard that he had, in that interview, told the reporter he was "Spencer McDoogle", the first thing that came to mind was "ohh great, another repeat of the 2005 season." In my opinion, one reason for the lack of success of the 2005 season was vast overconfidence. I put this on both Coach Fulmer, who was talking National Championship with the press in the Spring of '05, and team chemistry issues. Of couse, us outside the program will never know 100% what happens with any situation involving the team, but based on what we do know, the overconfidence was certainly an issue in '05.

It is true that overconfidence may not be an issue with Arian. I even do beleive that what he said was simply an inside joke that he told a reporter. But perception is, when I guy renames himself a la Puff Daddy, that he has a huge, unwarranted ego.

And I never said Arian doesn't have the ability to play SEC football. I said his output has yet to catch up with his obvious potential.

I have no clue where that perception could possibly come from. It's not like he called himself "The greatest" or "Superman" or something else ego-ridden. He was just being goofy. Why read anything more into it?
