To Protect and to Serve...

I never sit with my back to the door and I've never been a cop. I don't even remember why I started doing it, but now it's a habit.

I never have been accused of being one of those guys who is constantly vigilant (rarely if ever go out with a gun anymore) (probably because I dont want to be hindered if I decide to toss one back), but everyone could benefit from ascribing to a few things that make them less of a potential victim.

I agree. I've noticed over the years that I tend to watch what other people around me are doing more than my friends and wife does. It's amazing what you'll see sometimes that goes completely unnoticed by others.

I still blade people in conversations, sit in the back of restaurants facing the door, and look for bulges in waist lines. It never goes away.

My dad always did this. I wondered why as a kid. When I got older I understood. He put a lot of bad people in jail and was always careful.

You know how training is. But when it was explained to me almost 30 years ago I believe there were videos depicting assaults on officers while they were engaged with the driver (already past the trunk with their back exposed).

They could have a trunk monkey. Google it for a laugh,I can't right now.

Did he always lock the doors, then lock them again, and maybe again just for good measure? Lol

Sounds like an officer who paid attention in training. A lot of their tactics are designed to for safety and are generally non intrusive. Very good that you picked up on these things in your short interaction. You may have also noticed that he stayed behind the pillar and kept his strong hand free. Maybe training has changed, Grand may speak more to this.

Older deputy. He was nice. I had my license in my hand but he didn't ask for it.

Now that I think about it, he did stay behind the B pillar of the truck until I assume he felt there was no threat. At that time he was square with me at my door.

There was a LEO shot & killed last night in Memphis.....did y'all hear about that? A 33 yo policeman was shot multiple times during a traffic stop. Killer is still on the run.

Yeah. Very sad. All of my family back home has been discussing it on Facebook as well.

Then I'm not totally insane.

Nope.

I catch myself doing things that I witnessed him doing.

I remember as a kid, he came home with a new pistol. A Smith and Wesson 357 magnum. I asked why he bought a new gun. (He always carried a 38) he looked at me and told me that a 38 won't stop everybody. I can only assume he had to use his 38 for defense.

Saw that... Absolutely terrible. And some people wonder why cops are standoffish. You never know what you're going to walk up on.

Ever wonder why people are standoffish with cops? 70 cops tragically killed in the line of duty this year. Over 500 unarmed civilians killed by police this year. Only one group has the motto to protect and serve. Oh and I hope the pos who shot the cop gets the death penalty.

How come when cops shoot a civilian we should not over react and wait until the facts come out, yet when a civilian shots a cops we call for the death penalty?

Listen it probably was cold-blooded murder but until more info comes out I won't completely dismiss the idea that it may have been self defense.

I should clarify. Death penalty if deserved but odds are its deserved.

You're probably right. My only issue is that most people's mentality is that there's basically no justification for ever shooting a cop. I've seen some videos to where, in my opinion, the citizen would have been more than justified in defending their self.

In some cases I might agree, but knowing how Memphis is, I would imagine this is not one of those situations. That place is a jungle.

People should be standoffish. It's a mutual respect type thing. However, don't be stupid when questioned and there's generally not going to be a problem. There are a-hole cops out there.. No one will ever say there aren't. The north Charleston cop.. Complete waste of human DNA that deserves the book including death penalty. From the civilian side... If he hadn't of run he would likely still be alive.

I agree about the piece of ****.

Terrible news. You never know who you are pulling over.

I always thought they called in the plates and found out who it was before even getting out of the car --- but I guess it could be a law abiding citizens car and a thug driving it
