If it was something as subjective as neglect, I would argue that she could have easily been let off with some kind words of advice.

I posted a link above that talks to the type of case. And it is subjective depending on age of the child, place, conditions, etc. But that's on the courts, not the cops.

We aren't talking about her rolling through a stop sign here with a stern "don't do it again" from the responding officers. This is a bit more serious.

I would've qualified as a free range kids, at 8 we were roaming all over the place for a ful day. If you're paranoid of the world you'll never get to experience it.

There's a difference in letting your kid roam in say South Knox County (my stomping grounds) and New York City. If the kid were a little older in wouldn't see it as a problem but still in elementary school in new York...don't think it's OK.

I grew up outside a fairly large urban area, we'd go play in the city parks all the time. People saying the Lego Store = Brownsville need to get a clue.

I think it's definitely based on feeling of your surroundings. If I've learned one thing from being a parent it's that most of the ideas I held prior are completely useless. We spent lots of time outside but my parents had a pretty good idea where we were.

What defines a free range kid? My kids go all over our subdivision (within about a mile of our house), but they are not to leave the subdivision.
