I'm not going to sacrifice my own self interest so that my community might be better off. Me talking to police in any capacity has a chance of being harmful to my own cause and absolutely no chance of helping my cause. Therefore, I care little how my talking to cops affects the community, as it does nothing to help me.

Ok, so what. You don't want to talk to the police, that's been established several times over. I understood it the first titme.

I'll talk to the police any time they want to talk to me. I care how my talking to the cops affects the community, as one day it may help my family.

It never hurts to build rapport with LEO imo but I don't have an irrational fear of them either.

If you're not doing anything criminal, just answer him. He is attempting to see if you're a good guy.. (in most cases) If he's being an ass be an ass back and let him know how unprofessional he is. I'm not telling anyone to cow down to an abusive cop I'm just saying it's not always about the cop being a jerk.

Fact remains this was a tip from a known drug user and thief and no drugs or illegal activity were found. This boils down to a man being murdered in his own house by the state because he practiced his 2nd amendment right.

I've posted the video that Septic just posted with Professor Duane, and you should watch it. Never, ever talk to the police. I will never speak to any police officer under ANY circumstance -- no matter what. Questions from the police are designed to illicit a response, often contradictory, that justifies a further detention of yourself. Here's the only five phrases a cop should hear from everyone:

1) Am I being detained?
2) Am I free to go?
3) I'm exercising my Fifth Amendment right to remain silent.
4) I don't consent to searches.
5) I want a lawyer.

If you say anything else to a cop other than that, you're asking for trouble.

I care how my talking to police affects the community too, and I would talk to them under the circumstances that my words couldn't be used against me. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. Trying to make it about me being a bad community member is like a politician accusing another politician of hating minorities because they don't want to increase entitlement spending.

If I'm pulled over for a traffic violation all I should provide is I'm operating the vehicle legally with my license, registration, & proof of insurance. He should issue my ticket or warning & tell me to have a nice day & I'll do the same. I shouldn't have to answer any questions outside of that unless there's probable cause. Not answering personal questions that's none of his damn business isn't probable cause nor should it deem me "suspicious".

Thats what happens when you're living right. All we can rely on is anecdotal information. If I were ever to look for non aneccdotal information I'm sure I could find it, but I like my life and community. Socialist and all... Reminds me, I'm going over to my neighbors to get some sugar, through their unlocked door.

It must be frustrating for you to know that the boogeyman isnt out to get me. I think I'm going to go up to the police station with a couple of dozen donuts and talk to every cop I see.

No, passengers and police are subject to the rules of Terry. The police must have reasonable suspicion based on articulable facts to make an individual ID themselves. The driver must show a license, but that's it. Passengers are pedestrians. The police can remove people from the car for safety reasons, but they're supposed to have a justification (i.e., the driver has a criminal history; a person appeared to be moving an object under the seat, etc.). In other words, the cops are not supposed to walk up and order everyone out of the car for no reason, but they do it anyway. Just like they do with car searches. If they want to search, they'll manufacture probable cause. If it's contested by a citizen, they'll use "qualified immunity" as a defense. A police department in Illinois had to settle a lawsuit for doing just that.
