In order of importance

1 - "New" Crompton - Everybody knows that Jonathan Crompton has improved dramatically over the course of this season. Now, as the leader of the offense, Jonathan Crompton will have to be on fire to beat this speedy Tech team.

2 - Underdogs - Remember three years ago when we beat Cal 35-18? After the game I can't remember which player but he said, "We were sick of hearing how good they were and that they are gonna beat us" I think we need to have the same, fiery feeling December 30.

3 - Ole' Monte - Monte Kiffin has been a phenomenal defensive coordinator throughout the year. He has his weak points though. Our D has struggled against "new" "college" type offenses like the Spread which virginia tech uses. I have faith in Monte to despise a plan to stop Tyrod and the crew.

4 - Big Backfield - In all of Tennessee's losses Hardesty has been held under 100 yards. In order for crompton to have a good game, it is essential for Hardesty to have a good game. In our loss vs bama Hardesty had 48 yards, whereas in the South Carolina game he had 121 yards.
Bryce Brown being a backup obviously needs to step up too.

Thanks guys I just thought I wanted to share that with you all. hope you like it.

Give Monte another off season and I'm sure we will be much better against the spread next year.

Special teams should be at the top of the list. Ever year, Beamer Ball creates havoc for the opposition ST, and our special teams have been, well, special  this year.

Virginia Tech is going to try and make a point to be more physical than us. Don't let it happen is the way to beat them. They're going to run right at us, because that's what they do best. The kids are going too have to want it awful bad, because VA Tech is going to want it real bad. They've also played two games in that dome already this year. Advantage Va Tech, good part is they lost both of them.

No offense to the original post, but I did not realize that VT runs a spread offense or some version of it. Yes Tyrod is mobile QB, but it seems like have seen him under center a lot this year. Can someone fill me in please?

How do you despise a plan?

They don't run the spread, but they will give you different looks. I don't know where people get that. I guess since we haven't defended it very well at times everyone believes they will. They're not going to change who they are. They like power football and Monte likes defending it. I don't doubt that they try some spread formations though.

They have played 2 games in Atlanta, but only 1 game in the Dome. The other game was at Bobby Dodd Stadium against Georgia Tech

The key is we will need to be more motivated. That is it.

The media here in southwest Virginia makes it out like an easy Tech win. They act like Tech should not be playing an unranked team like Tennessee. They feel we are unworthy.

If Tech's football team carries that attitude over, like they have underachieved and this game means nothing, we will blow them out. If they get fired up but we are moreso, since we have more to prove and nothing to lose, we will blow them out.

The major, major, major key for us is motivation.

Have we really sunk so far that we're honestly considering that there is a real possibility we don't beat freaking VA Tech?? Barring some five turnover disaster like UCLA, I just don't see them staying in the game. We've got more talent and better coaching. I don't see what their record has to do with it, since we'd easily have the same record with their schedule. Don't get caught up too much in the rankings. They truly are meaningless unless you're one or two. Central Michigan is also ranked, but like Va Tech, I don't see them beating us.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that post rockytop. Tennessee is a team on the next level when they get pumped up for a game. If we get pumped like we did for the USCjr game there will be no worries.

VT doesn't run the spread.

They have a version called the Wild Turkey that they almost NEVER run

We don't run much of a spread. We'll pound RW over and over. Then we may run a zone read with Tyrod if the defense is playing to stop him. I don't know what to say about the passing game. Everyone is down on it, but we have the playmakers to get it done. TT does a hell of a job to buy time.

Should we be fortunate enough to win this game, which is by no means a given, it will be interesting to read the reactions of the Vol fans who think the Hokies don't stand a chance. Tennessee might well have had a 9 or 10 win season if they were in the ACC, but I find the notion of some (small) percentage of Vol fans chalking this up as an easy W simply by virtue of playing an ACC team laughable. Then again, there are probably some idiot Hokie fans who think this will be an easy W for us since our opponent is unranked. But I'm certainly not among them.

Volunteer fans with a functional brain realize this will be an extremely tough challenge. Looking forward to a great game.

Anyone who thinks UT wins on talent is wrong, anyone who thinks VT wins on Spec Teams alone could be right ! Anyone who thinks that VT can line up and run down our throat all night might be right ! Anyone that thinks EB will be a factor is wrong, they have scheemed(sp) around him(as we would). This event comes down to HEART/DESIRE and the will to win. The lines are even, the quarter backs are sooo different, the VOLS have a chance but only a small one. We NEED everything to go our way.........
