So, how do you manage the interview process without the whole world knowing? Fly them in? You fly there? Neutral site?

No matter how bad any of us want Butch to stay or leave, nobody in their right mind wants an AD who has turned in his notice conducting a search right now.

But if we fire him next season? He won't need to be in any rush to find new employment. He will be free to take his sweet time.

To your point tho, the problems with Butch are correctable.

1) Learn how to handle the media. It seems like a skill that's eroded for him. Should be correctable. Also, be more consistent in your message to the media.

2) Fix the S&C program. I think he'll do this and it will be fine.

3) I don't know how realistic it is, but the idea floated in another thread about by DeBord coaching the line as co-OC and bringing in a QB coach as another OC would be great. If you can grab someone like Helfrich and let him call the plays, I think he can develop the QBs.

4) Let Shoop have his guys and stay out of the coordinators way. You have to operate on the assumption that Shoop will be fine with his dudes and a somewhat healthy defense.

Is it a matter of not willing or pay, or can't pay? I remember hearing about the athletic department being cash strapped when we fired Dooley and how that could impact hiring a new coach. Have those funds been replenished? How do we compare to other P5 schools?

I'll admit I'm not an expert on the facts of the University's exact financial situation (despite finance being my career field).

You let him know up front that you are interviewing

So what if it hurts his feelings?

If he leaves, he just helped us out with the buyout

You should always have a plan if things go south

Why exactly is the school not willing to pay?

The only reason a school like Tennessee would be unwilling to pay big money to a coach is if they felt like such an expenditure would put them in a difficult financial situation, especially if the hire was a dud.

Well a lot of folks are going to be giving up season tickets this year anyways because they're tired of the mediocre product that's being put out on the field. It's time to start winning again.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I have no idea. My guess would be they're not smart enough to understand you have to spend money to make money. Leadership is changing, so maybe that changes. I'm just outside looking in, so who knows the real reason.

We are paying Butch 4+ million now, so maybe the attitude is already changing.

You could also sell me on ignorant "we are Tennessee, and that's enough" lines of thinking if I had been drinking.

Yah, a ton of people will be there to pick them up. I don't think that's true to the same degree in a situation like Briles.

The thing about season tickets is where your donation goes. You're helping put those guys through school, and some of them wouldn't have had the opportunity otherwise. Not everyone takes it seriously, but I like to think enough do that I'll continue to donate under Butch.

Jimbo Fisher was interested in the LSU job, but talks stalled when his asking price was $6.5 million. I would take him in a heartbeat. 77-17 in 7 seasons, and a national championship winner. He would do incredible things with a QB like Jarrett Guarantano, and the weapons we have on offense. Recruits like a mad man too.

I'm not saying I will not continue to support my university, I love UT and will always be a VFL. I'm saying the fans deserve better, and so the players who have put their bodies on the line for this state. Butch has shown his true colors, and is simply not a very good coach. He won't miraculously change in a year either.

It's time to get an AD in there who cares about the future of this program and the cord needs to be cut now. We have the money and resources to get a big time coach in Knoxville.

Disagreeing on who they are hiring is one. Division exists with some that matter. Which is why you end up with Jones type hires.

So there are internal disagreements about which big name guys people want, so you end up with a mid-tier guy? You can't decide between a Ferrari and a Lambo, so you buy an Infiniti? Makes no sense.

Seems like one of the factions that supports a big name guy would just win out.
