Not taking sides here in this thread. Not looking for a debate on whether or not he should be fired.

If you were the AD and fired Butch today:

1. Who is the first coach you target?
1. What other coaches would you target?
2. Of those you target, who do you think you'd have the best chance of hiring?

The rest of those questions have some other questions that need to be answered first.

1. How much support do I have from the $ backing this?
2. How much control can be given toward a new coach to run his program the way he sees fit? And he sinks or swims with those decisions

I want to know that before I make too may calls.

If Im the AD and I know I want to fire Jones Im "targeting" his replacement and know where I stand before I pull the trigger.

1. Who is the first coach you target?

PETE CARROLL

2. What other coaches would you target?

GARY Patterson and Chip Kelly

3. Of those you target, who do you think you'd have the best chance of hiring?

Kelly or Carroll

BUT you would have to throw the money at them and the University of Tennessee has NEVER spent big bucks on a football coach, so Butch Jones will be here for a while imo.

PJ Fleck, which may not be any better.

I'd kick the tires on some setting P5 guys to see if they were tired of where they are. I'd also call John Harbaugh to see if he's actually tired of Ravens fans and let him tell me no. Also, Willie Taggart and Jeff Brohm.

In the end, I feel the best I could do is Norvell at Memphis. That's a huge risk. Huge.

I'd probably hire Strong if he convinced me the coordinator hires would be right out of the gate. The fan base would riot, tho.

TN will never be able to get the hottest name in coaching. The AD is going have to actually work to find the next guy, but that's why they get paid a million a year.

I dont fire Butch until I have someone hired

Until then, I help surround Butch with the best assistants. I do this by strongly suggesting that he needs to get rid of his loyal buddies. If he doesnt take the hint, I let him know if he doesnt, then he can find new employment next year

You could throw 20 million at Pete Carroll and he wouldn't come here. Also, USC's sanctions were a result of what happened under his watch.

A new concept for UT ADs... a plan! If Summer's Eve Hamilton had seen that the whole last decade would have been different.

He's already indicated he is capable of doing that by firing Jancek at the end of last season.

What's interesting is that the buddy everybody wanted fired earlier in the year (DeBord) seemed to have the offense playing OK later in the year, albeit against bad defenses. It is very hard to fire DeBord now considering Tennessee scored 49, 63, and 34 points in our last 3 conference games.

It is the defense and Shoop, who everybody loved or at least was excited about early in the year, that became atrocious as the season went on.

You have a less than 20% change of landing Patterson. The other two are kinda ridiculous. Kelly enjoys the NFL life and probably won't be fired this year. Carroll is competing for and winning Super Bowls.

1. Gary Patterson
2. Kyle Wittingham, Troy Calhoun, P.J. Fleck, Charlie Strong, Chris Pederson, Larry Fedora, Dan Mullin, Willie Taggart, David Shaw, Derek Mason, Les Miles
3. Could probably get all but Patterson and Pederson and Shaw.

If it were between Briles, Kiffin, or Petrino, id take Derek Dooley.

Play calling changes significantly during the season, or at least it has the last two years. It's far too conservative far too often, and then we'll score a million points. It makes me think the person calling the plays changes, but I obviously don't know that for certain.

...and there's absolutely no reason in the world for Patterson to leave TCU. Tennessee either couldn't or wouldn't pay him all that much more than TCU does, plus the expectations and pressure are greater, and he's not an SEC guy.

That's what I want to see in this thread...coaches who (at least in someone's judgment) would be upgrades over Butch AND we could actually land. The list is either extremely small or nonexistent.

I can accept Butch being in Ktown next Fall under ONE pretense:

1. He hires an incredible OC

We have had soooo much talent over the years that is just wasted because we have not had, IMO, a proficient play caller.

Tier 2: MacIntyre, Fedora, Mullen, Holgorsen

Tier 3: Taggert, Frost, Doeren, Bobo, Brohm

Tier 4: Fleck, Montgomery, Norvell

We missed the boat by two years. Justin Fuente would have been great.

I think if we were willing to pay, there might be a guy out there that's unhappy that might move. The roster is good except for a few spots that that are easily addressed. The right guy could win immediately.
