That's not how football programs work. Butch is never "safe". No coach is. They are one bad decision away from losing their job. This is about reputation and money. It's not much different than running a business. At the end of the day, you are looking at the ROI. Smart business men know when to make hard decisions. Now with that being said, i believe they will give him the benefit of the doubt and put him in a position to make changes (OC and OL for ex.). I think the AD situation is tricky but notable coaching hires define an athletic director and next season Butch would have to make drastic improvement or he'll be gone (personally, i believe the latter). Again, it's still not impossible this year...lose to Vandy and KY and I think he's gone. I doubt that will happen though.

He's here until the end of 2018 unless we only win three games next year. I figure we'll win six or seven.

He will be here next season almost certainly, but he isn't by any means "safe" beyond that. 2018 might as well be a decade away as far as this discussion goes.

I think people just repeat what they hear others saying. Even if it is completely illogical

Well I haven't heard anyone say that. I think it's logical. If you think butch is getting fired this year or even next year barring an absolute meltdown you're going to be disappointed. Deal with it.

I'm thinking we lose to Vandy and Mizzou. I know Kentucky beat both of them, but we know they have a mental block with Tennessee.

Mizzou is awful, but so was South Carolina. We lose because we beat ourselves. The only team to flat out beat us was Bama. And Mizzou will move the ball on us. And our offense will make their defense look like "the Mizzou defense they've come to know in seasons past".

These players have given up, because they KNOW their head coach is lame.

Some of you all don't realize how bad things have gotten yet. We've been winning off talent and belief all year. Not coaching...

Our players have run out of motivation. This is and has been a coaching problem for 4 years running.

If they lose to KY and vandy then yes he needs to be shown the door, especially if we get throttled by KY which is possible with the way they can score.

You don't take a pre-season top 10 team and crap the bed like that, the offense has been crap all season long, if your SR QB still can't hit the simplest of passes then he needs to be benched, the defense has played admirable despite all the injuries.

So either Butch needs to show debord and mahoney and the sc coach the door, or the administration needs to step in and show butch the door.

Also if anyone thinks this is too extreme, keep in mind there are media people out there that are questioning this staff, offensive side in particular, and wondering how we sre so bad

he's got a great buy out. the AD is retiring, and the replacement will in all likelihood be someone familiar with the program.

change in philosophy has to start at the top, and i don't see anything revolutionary happening on The Hill that leads me to believe that all the sudden we're going to do anything to change the status quo.

we're not firing him this year, and we're not buying him out, and then ponying up 6-7 million/year for the next Nick Saban or Urban Meyer.

that hasn't been, nor will it be, the priority for the people in charge. if you can give any reasons to think otherwise, please...do tell.

If the stands empty, they will be forced to make a change

Thats how fans have a voice

Make it loud and clear

true. but we're a year or two from that level of apathy setting in.

the kind of change being discussed here, is a matter of priorities, and making a change tot he HC right now in order to make this program a true championship contender is not there.

hitting the bottom line is, so to your point, which i agree with, it's 2 years away. we get to 2018 with home games again with Bama and FL and there's more blue and crimson in the stands than orange, then it'll happen.

Vols expectations were to win the SEC East and get to Atlanta. Butch and his staff failed. This is the easiest that the East has ever been. If Vols have not been so lucky they we would be 3-5 right now. Inexcusable. Butch can blame injuries all he wants but it was not injuries that caused Vols to play like crap at the beginning of the season. If Vols could hurry up and hire Blackburn or someone who has UT Ties in at AD then things can get done a lot quicker. Vols cleaned house at the top. If Blackburn can't come in yet then get Fulmer to be Interim AD for now

Guys, Fulmer won the SEC East in 2007 but was fired in 2008. He also got an extension by the A.D. yet he still was fired less 10 months later.
Let bUTch have us miss a bowl game next season and see what happens!!!!!!!

Thank you Mr. Prognosticator.

We lost to Florida three years that we should have beaten them. THen last season, we lost to Arkansas, which we shouldn't have. THen this year, we lost to USC.

Pretty much this.

The athletic department probably doesn't want him to go anywhere before 2019, but it sounds like some here vastly underestimate the power of public (and private) persuasion. I don't see any feasible way he's gone after this year. But if things get bad enough in 2017, he won't be here in 2018.

Looks like Hart was to quick to extend CBJ's contract, it'll cost Tennessee $6M to fire him (correct if wrong). Hope the new AD will stop the pattern of stupid and ridiculous contract negotiations . :jpshakehead:

.

Please explain how we afford a buyout of the entire staff, even if we can stretch it over 5 years, and afford to hire an entire new staff.

CBJ and Co are here until for the next two seasons without a seachange in booster donations, or a violation of contract that is a firable offense.

Ok. We'll wait two years and see if you're right. :)
