When did the Daytona 500 move to the Speed channel? What do truck races in 1995 and 1996 have to do with his last Daytona 500 broadcast happening in 1997?

As I've stated numerous times, he covered the Daytona and has been part of the Speed crew on a couple of occasions during Speedweeks.

OK, glad we agree that he hasn't actually covered the race lap-by-lap in the broadcasting booth in over 12 years.

If we are going to talk about who is the best broadcaster/announcer, then we should mention the radio guys on MRN. They make it so you can "see" the race, ala John Ward with UT Sports.

I thought Eli Gould was good, and way back Jim Burns was good in the pits. I spotted for Jim at Bristol once in the press box. He lived in Bristol, and we worked together at the Kingsport Speedway.

Eli was great on tv/and now on radio. Jim Burns is before my day.

different strokes for different folks. Too often when you get former competitors doing color commentary, you get a biased not fully informed view of what's going on. In racing you have DW doing that. Baseball has Joe Morgan and football has theirs. I just don't believe that because you were a professional in the sport makes you good at doing commentary for the sport.
I agree BILL it seems that if you did it for a living it some how qualifies you to announce it.
