Butch would never say that. I imagine him saying "we are still a very young football team. It's a process"
"We have been picked to win between 1 and 2 games this season by so-called experts"
"The average age of our team is 12.6 years old"
"We will play 152 true freshmen this upcoming season"
"Some of our players have never played a single snap of Pee-Wee football, so it's a learning process for them"
I never understand this. It's not just Aesius, I've seen many people make fun of CBJ in this manner.
The only thing I would say Butch exaggerated on was the projected wins from experts. And it wasn't even that much of an exaggeration; I know of several pundits that picked UT to win around 4 or 5 games. He was only trying to sell his team and motivate them. You guys are harping on him for that?
The rest are facts. We have been a young team (still are) and we play tons of freshman with zero collegiate experience and I honestly don't expect anything different this year.
So what's the problem?

You also have to observe those that complain about cliche's. Usually they read every interview word for word, then complain about hearing the same things. When someone is running a campaign for sports, politics, whatever- They have talking points they repeat.
I am in no way surprised by the talking points being repeated, I am however, surprised by the reaction of those who are.
Of course some are just making a joke.
It just seems like the majority of the team is made up of freshman and sophomores for the last 10 years.
And will likely always be that way.
Attrition takes many forms:
So the best "model" of a team demographically is usually in the form of a flat-top pyramid:
- Career-ending injuries
- Loss of interest
- Transfers for playing time, compassionate needs, etc.
- Early draft entry
- etc.
....____________
.../..18 seniors....\
../..22 juniors.......\
./..28 sophomores..\
/..32 freshmen........\
-------------------------
Following the model, 32+28 = 60 of 100 players are freshmen and sophomores (60%).
Now, our current demographics are a little younger than that. We're about 67% underclassmen. Our pyramid looks like:
....____________
.../..18 seniors....\
../..17 juniors.......\
./..26 sophomores..\
/..44 freshmen........\
-------------------------
Biggest differences from the model are our juniors (thin, -5) and freshmen (heavy, +12). So we're a little younger than the model suggests, but not extremely so.
great post. What would those percentages look like if you went by starters or players who get major playing time (i.e. TKJR or josh Malone)?
Is it possible to make a model based off of that? Yes, I realize that the term "major playing time" would need to be defined, but I don't have a clue about stuff like that.
