What is wrong with making gun safety an elected course ?
but drivers ed is not taught in middle school and they must be of age to obtain a permit
it's illegal for HS kids to have sex? Things sure have changed
also I doubt the alcohol/drug class tells them how best to ingest those materials
and civics? Come on
This really wouldn't bother me. Hell, anyone wanting to carry should WANT to know what they're doing. Something along the lines of the Hunter Safety Course but for SD carry.
Ok the sex thing was a reach but not teaching basic gun safety because they can't legally own a gun is not a rational aurgument against.
And for the record it is not illegal for a minor to own a long gun in many states including TN.
it actually is. You're teaching something that cannot be practiced for years and is likely to be forgotten
Can a minor use that gun with no limitations under the law?
There is no minimum age to possess rifles and shotguns in Tennessee.
Federal law in this area distinguishes between long guns (rifles and shotguns) and handguns, and between gun possession and gun sales. Federal law also distinguishes between licensed and unlicensed gun sellers.
Minimum Age for Gun Sales and Transfers:
Under federal law - Handguns Long Guns (Rifles and Shotguns)
Licensed firearms dealers Dealers may not sell or deliver a handgun or ammunition for a handgun to any person the dealer has reasonable cause to believe is under age 21.8 Dealers may not sell or deliver a long gun, or ammunition for a long gun, to any person the dealer has reasonable cause to believe is under age 18.9
Unlicensed persons Unlicensed persons may not sell, deliver or otherwise transfer a handgun or handgun ammunition to any person the transferor has reasonable cause to believe is under age 18, with certain exceptions*.10 Unlicensed persons may sell, deliver, or otherwise transfer a long gun or long gun ammunition to a person of any age.

Okay so this is my thought. If we can carry a gun around on our hips; why is it that I can't smoke pot in my home? I think this bill is all about freedom. Which is totally fine with me. So when is it that we are all going to get our share of freedom? Sorry to be off topic but I like the bill. Just wish we could all have OUR freedom.
Thinking about calling my rep and asking him to add that amendment!
Actually that's not all true
My kids hunt as well as many others hunt, so basic firearms safety would be a plus. Hunter Safety only covers a small amount compared to a true firearms class
Also, my kids as many other kids are at the age that mom and dad leave them at home by themselves. My kids have been taught a plan in case of a burglar or home invasion. They know to grab one of my handguns and hunker down in our bedroom closet. If the person attempts to enter, they are to sling lead. Other kids have parents that have handguns and other guns and how to deal with such a scenario would be beneficial to those kids
Even though they can't own a gun, they can still use it and use it well if taught the proper techniques.
The actual website:
Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence
Now that is put to bed what's the next argument?

why teach it in schools if the students can't legally own a gun? They don't teach driver's ed in elem school
At 12 years old you can take a Hunter's Safety Education Course and legally hunt.
Would Hunter's Safety or experience with firearms in the military qualify in y'all's opinion of gun saftey course?

Oh, so it's stupid to teach basic safety?
And very liberal of you to start going worst case about gang bangers and hoodlums when you darn well know that's the extreme minority you doddering fool. Why don't you and LG get together and bring up the worst possible situations?
Hunters safety might be okay. Firearms in the military is a pretty wide brush. There are idiots in the USAF that can claim "experience" that I wouldn't personally trust with a slingshot.
Technical proficiency would be the ultimate goal. A rangemaster, firearms instructor or the like would be ideal.
