Jaden Butler details why Tennessee was home for him

Brownsville, Tennessee safety Jaden Butler made his decision public on Thursday when he announced in front of the Haywood student body that he would be wearing orange and white at the college level. Before making his decision public, he caught up with Volquest to detail his decision.

“I just felt like it was the right time to commit and get off the board,” Butler said. “Just help them recruit as well.”

He has been up to visit Tennessee several times. So when did he know Knoxville was the best place for him?

“When the head coach came down it was a big thing,” Butler said. “A lot of times they don’t come and so when he came down it meant a big thing to me.”

And it was Josh Heupel, who helped sell him on the dream to wear orange.

“I like his style of play,” Butler said. “He has been coaching for a while and coaching one of the greats. He was a great communicator.”
When he was up in January, he got to sit down with Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. His experience was very evident to Butler.

“I like coach Knowles because he has coached some of the best,” Butler said. “He came up with the 4-2-5 defense so he is very familiar and he is great at developing players as well.

“He talked to me about how they could see me at a lot of positions spread across the field to help them.”

And the person that came out to see him besides Heupel was co-defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter. The college football Hall of Famer has an impressive track record on and off the field.

“He played my position so I can trust him in the secondary position,” Butler said. “He won a Super Bowl and he coaches well and has great character development skills. We talk about life. He was the only one that came down and met my mom and that meant a lot to me.”

So what is Tennessee getting in Butler?

“A hard worker with dedication in and out,” Butler said. “Someone who isn’t going to quit. Physicality and versatility, communication and leadership as well. When I was a little kid backyard football was a big thing so I just like being physical.”

I’ll be the first to say that I don’t know much about this kid. Conventional wisdom says that moving around positions has hurt his “rankings”. However, if what I’m hearing is true, from folks I trust, this kid is a great athlete and will work to be the best at whatever position he goes to. Think the exact opposite of Boo Carter.

I’m willing to bet that he turns heads in camps this summer. Im glad he has committed to the Good Guys and look forward to his growth.
