I'm planning on going to the TN-LSU game this Oct and was wanting some advice from previous people that have made the trip. Is there a certain hotel you would recommend or one where fellow Vols fans will be staying? And is it better to stay in Baton Rouge or New Orleans? Just trying to get my trip booked, thanks.

Im heading down for the first time as well this year. I have already booked my flight into Baton Rouge. I plan on staying near the airport in Baton Rouge as well. It seems to be a good location to stay in. If you hear anything different, please let me know.

I used to live in New Orleans, went to the game in 2000 down there.

New Orleans downtown would be fun place to get your hotel- especially when we win.

Also,(pre-oil) it is the best time of year for red-fishing- I highly reccommend that.
I heard they stopped the oil leak. They put a wedding band on it, and it quit putting out.

Went in '01 and stayed at the Shoney's Inn outside of town. Worst hotel experience ever! Hope that place has been leveled since.

Stay in New Orleans Friday night, BR Sat. night. LA State patrol has heavy presence on I-10 after games looking for DUI's.

I recommend the W for Friday. Eat at Cochon or Delmonico... get reservations, its worth it.

I recommend the Extended Stay America on Corporate Boulevard for Saturday. Eat at The Chimes for dinner.

For lunch you should crash the sweetest LSU tailgate possible with an offering of Jack Black - Enjoy hanging out with the Tigah fans, and get used to the "Tiger Bait" cheer (at the end of the day, they have Les Miles... and that is just plain foolishness right there! Pity them, regardless of the final score). Seriously, you get to hang out with UT fans seven Saturdays a year. Its only every five years we get to go to BR. Be sure to talk about how Billy Cannon lost to Tennessee in 1959 the week after the "Halloween Night Run".

I recommend the Cracker Barrel in Gonzales on your way back to Louis Armstrong Int'l on Sunday morning.

Oh yeah... JEALOUS!!

Thanks for all the responses guys. That sounds like a good plan Friday night New Orleans and Saturday night Baton Rouge, I definitely don't want a dui especially in LA.

I was working with my dad post Katrina and attended the 05 game so we were staying in Hattiesburg MS so I just drove home after the game. As a result I can't really help you with the travel arrangements but I will say that it's no doubt one of, if not the most, hostile environments I've ever been to. So be prepared for some harrassment and just try and be polite and it shouldn't be that bad.

The Shoney's Hotel outside New Orleans in Metairie? If so it's still here and operating, I live about a mile from it. I wouldn't stay there. There are a bunch of hotels that I do recommend though. Metairie (10 minutes west of Downtown New Orleans) is only about a 45-60 minute drive (depending on traffic) to Baton Rouge and there are several hotels here that are fairly nice at a decent price. If there is a lot of interest, I can list them with phone #'s. Metairie is next to the Airport, about a 5-10 minute drive.

Also, there is a cafe here off the Causeway West bound exit in Metairie called the City Cafe. Doesn't look like much, but they have the best breakfast around and they are fast and cheap. I recommend the crab cakes, they are out of this world. If anyone is staying in Metairie let me know I can list some great restaurants.

I have lived here for the past 3 years moving from Knoxville.

Since the early 80's I have been to numerous LSU games and can tell you, YOU WILL LOVE IT! There is a hotel right across the bridge when leaving Baton Rouge going into Pier Part and heading towards Plaquemine, La. Its on the left. Probably 15 minutes from campus. Can't remember the name of it but not a bad place. I think its a Best Western. Go early and go to mass on game day. The priest will offer you free beer and Jambalaya after mass....Love the Catholics

We went down last time. Flew into NOLA and stayed there too. Drove over to BR for the game. NOLA is such a great, unique town.

I was just in NOLA for work. Still a fun town even though it's lost some of its unique character since Katrina. I'm looking to make my first trip to Baton Rouge this October as well.

Thanks again for all the recommendations. I don't know if there is ant interest but if some of you may be interested I'll probably stay in NOLA and drive up. If anyone wants to see if we could get a discount rate for a block of rooms and rent a van/bus to drive us to the game and back, let me know. It may save some money and I always have a blast with fellow Vols fans. If you're interested let me know. Thanks

Motels near the Baton Rouge airport -- not that nice an area.
Pier Part across bridge from Baton Rouge -- no, you must mean Port Allen.
45 minutes from BR to N.O. airport -- don't count on that, its 1 hr normally and tons of traffic post-game.

Going in together on a van to shuttle back to N.O. -- sounds like a plan.
If ya have a DD, good tavern not far from campus is the Bulldog on Perkins.
Good brunch place on Sunday morn -- Another Broken Egg near Jefferson and Old Hammond. (Chimes is very good for both tavern and brunch, but so close to campus it will be packed with long wait).
Keeping your cool and being gracious under fire from Tiger fans -- priceless. They respect you being able to smile in the face of their taunts tell 'em helluva game; then they will be brought up short and tell you to have a safe trip home. I've seen that more than once.
