It's pretty well known that Acosta is going to walk on then get a scholarship down the road. You sir are the fail.

My entire point is that if he's a better FG kicker than Palardy (which would be the whole point of getting him at all), he'll get offers from other good programs. If he prefers walking on and taking his chances down the road, that's fine. But rarely would a kid give up a full ride to legit SEC programs to walk-on at another.

There is no 'fail' on my side...only the side that presents that Palardy isn't in UT's plans as a do-it-all kicker.

Acosta is very much in the plans.

Would you rather spend a scholarship on a backup Kicker or on another OL?

I think thats a pretty easy question to answer. If you don't...well...then I think I understand why you struggle to understand my point.
You do, when you're a new coach and want to get YOUR guys in here ASAP. CLK probably would never have recruited either guy on our current roster.

Under normal circumstances, I'd agree with you, but ST is THE 800 lb gorilla right now, and it needs some real attention. That's why I was so elated with Palardy's commitment. Nevertheless, with all the EE's we have, and backcounting scholarships, we will likely sign 30 guys. We certainly need more depth at ST right now than RB...so, we'll see where the staff goes with this.

BTW, if Gran is after Costa too, why are you shooting the messenger?

Ive got no proof Gran is except for "TheVol" acting like this is common knowledge and a done deal.

Can we sign 30? I was pretty sure the number was 28.

Because you don't understand how things work...

And when told how things work, you only respond with a "FAIL."

27 I think, but nobody is saying he will get a scholarship first year.

My father and I, both being CBHS alums, have heard this as well. We both stay in contact with the school and it's athletic department. Acosta is very much a part of the plan if he chooses to be. Guarantee of playing time in the SEC or a couple of other major programs may take him elsewhere. For now though, he has an open door to UT.

Again, I grasp this point.

Let me spell it out for you. He is an invited prefer walk-on or "greyshirt" that will not receive a scholarship this year and thus not count against the incoming class. He will receive his scholarship and count when he gets playing time. If he accepts, but he wants to be a VOl.

Thanks captain obvious.

It's been discussed over in the recruiting board, that with all the EE's...a number of which will be backcounted to the 09 class...some of the 09 class was backcounted to 08 (largely due to all the dismissals, transfers and such). At the end of the day, we are expected to take as many as 30. We've already lost 2 in this class to de-commitments...so, if the staff thinks the guy deserves a scholly and they really want the depth, we'll make room.

I think they are going to be really picky at the RB position and if we don't get any the top 3 or 4 on our board, I bet we pass on RB this year...so that's your scholly right there. I don't pretend to know what the situation is with Acosta, but under these rare circumstances, I'd prefer us to use a scholly to get the needed depth.

As we have seen, you can overcome some less than stellar talent at one OL position (LG...Corey Sullins is WAY undermanned), but having subpar talent at ST will get us beat...even when the rest of the team plays well enough to win. I don't want to gamble on just one guy.

He might love the Vols, and be willing to pay for a year.

I know very little about recruiting or behind-the-scenes details like that, so my comment is not stated with any sort of authority...
...but...

two of my cousins (brother & sister) went to Christen Brothers (I guess they graduated about 4 & 3 years ago, respectively), and I remember them telling me that most of their classmates were Mississippi fans--either Ole Miss or Mississippi St. They thought it was weird because everyone seemed to be for one of those two teams, so they were kind of "outcasts" for being big UT fans (they both go to UT now).

Anyway, I'm not trying to say that their kicker isn't a big UT fan--I'm just saying that as of a few years ago most of Christian Brothers' football players were fans of one of the Mississippi teams. (And you know how high schoolers can influence each others' opinions.)

All I know is that UT NEEDS a good kicker. Man-oh-man....

There were a few other players with mohawks going on. I know Shane Reveiz had one.

I agree, and that's a really good point ("where his head is...right now"). He looked ridiculous, immature, and completely unprofessional. (especially for someone not kicking ass)

Jiminy Christmas, who cares? It's his hair.

You really think Lincoln's personal grooming style is indicative of "where his head is at now"? You guys should be a professional psychologists. You'd make millions!! What hairstyle would you guys find appropriate for his football statistics, hmm? Had he hit the game-winner last week, would his 'do be more palatable to you? Maybe one week he plays at a 'mullet' level, but maybe another week he can only achieve 'suedehead' level...

"Completely unprofessional"? Is he working as a bank teller? Foreign diplomat? Oh, what? He's a student and a player on a collegiate football team. Jeesh.

I never said this was fact...I said it's what I had heard from his dad. As for his 63 yard kick...it wasn't in a game. If it's nonsense, simply don't read it. Not hard at all is it?

I was in shock when I heard Palardy might take punts also. Didn't say I believed it either tho. Only time will tell, not sure what reason this guy would have to lie to me in the first place. But I forgot that some ppl no more that others ever will and can't simply discuss a comment...which is all it was, just a comment. Thanks tho bud.

Palardy has a punting average over 50 yds. He hit an 80 yd punt the other night against Deefield Beach. It was called back due to a penalty. On the ensuing punt, he hit one from his 35 that ended up as a touchback. Was put on the 10 yd line due to DB penalty. You should have seen the punt returner trying to catch up to a ball that was 15 yds over his head.

I'm not sure if these differing points of view are age related or cultural---or both. There are those fans who'd like to see the players on the Vol Walk all be dressed in suit and tie; others don't mind if they're dressed in sweats with ear buds hanging around their necks. Some LOVE the black jerseys, others recoil at them. Some could not care less what the player's hair styles are, while some would like them to fall within the "norm".

I'm old (57) and admittedly fall on the conservative side of most of these issues. Fortunately, I KNOW I'm old. And I know the players are just kids (18-22). I also remember quite well that when I was their age I did things that "old" people did not approve of-----and I couldn't understand why.

As long as VolNation is populated with fans ranging in age from 9-90, there will age-specific issues/topics upon which agreement (or anything close to that) will never be reached. However, what overcomes any of the differing ideas is the one thing we all have in common: an incredible, unwavering love and dedication to our Volunteers.
