Saban was not who Ala originally went after. There is no way Ala knew Saban would be as successful as he has been. He had won a NC but not be dominant at Mich St or LSU. As a matter of history, so has Chizik and Fisher and Mack Brown. Prior wins are no guarantee of future results and championships. Do you want to pay Harbough 9M, Fisher 7.5M, or Malzahn at 6.5M per year for 6 to 8 years. If you are happy paying 750K to 1M per victory without a championship, that is your right. You could probably get Kelly from UCLA for about $5M a year right now.
Interesting. Its strange to talk about now, but if somebody said I knew Saban would be this dominant then they would be flat out liars. Nobody had any clue that Saban would be anywhere near this level. He could have just as easily flopped. But he didnt. Alabama got lucky, simple as that.
