'19 TN DT Tymon Mitchell

Honestly, I'm kind of skeptical of most DL coming out of the midstate anyway. Middle TN has produced like, what, 1 good SEC DL in the past 8-10 years? West TN hit rate is hardly better, if at all. East TN has Dylan Jackson, who's been solid, but unspectacular at Stanford (granted, I'd take him over some of the guys we have now).

I like that our staff is going after plenty of guys in Georgia/Mississippi/Alabama. Those states just seem to pump out way more quality DL.

TN football just isn't good. I don't get why people haven't grasped that yet. That's why many are busts. They don't play good competition week in and week out.

Yet in our heyday most of the team was from Tennessee 🤔
I think it's a balance. Right now, the staff is fostering a lot of relationships they had from previous coaching destinations, so there's a lot of value getting quality out-of-state talent using that. Eventually, that will filter out, and this staff will have developed better relationships with the TN HS coaches, and then I bet we start recruiting more in-state.

But, I think we'll level out at a still lower rate than Butch had.

Which is surprising considering the midstate growth. Maryville shouldn’t be able to compete in the top division with HS in Nashville, yet they do.

I know areas like Murfreesboro have built a lot of new schools and this could be diluting the talent pool. Riverdale has been supplanted by Siegel as the football school. I think Pearl Cohn in Nashville has even dropped down in classification, which indicates a lower enrollment.

Over the years that I have followed UT football, the state has traditionally produced very good offensive linemen. Clifton, Teague, McRae, Antone Davis, Jeff Smith, Bubba Miller, Scott Wells, Ramona Foster, James Stone, Tiny Richardson are all TN guys.

That trend is continuing with Trey Smith, Drew Richmond, Ryan Johnson, Jerome Carvin, and K’Rhojn Calbert who all will most likely start or contribute.

The state seems to struggle more with skill players although that changes year to year.

It blows my mind that UGA is getting three interior DL from Tennessee..what the eff is going on? Is the state of Georgia DL light this year?

I hope all these guys UGA is pulling from Tennessee this year to play on their DL continue that long trend of Tennessee DL not being very good at the next level. That would leave a big hole in their roster.

Edit..To clarify, I mean interior DL.

Y’all will make excuses for anything. We have flat out failed in state this cycle so far.

As long as the class is good, does it really matter where they come from? I could understand calling it "an excuse" if we weren't getting equal or better talent from elsewhere, but we are. We don't need an excuse because we aren't failing.

Saying we have failed at in-state recruiting is buying into a media narrative. There are only a handful of top in-state recruits that CJP has targeted and some of them, like Maurice Hampton, were committed to other schools before the new staff arrived. Schools like Arky and SCAR are taking TN recruits that we weren't aggressively pursuing. Building a fence around the state was Butch's strategy. Pruitt and Helton are going to find the best players wherever they live.

And the fact that we are competing with UGA for the best recruits in TN and GA is a positive for the program. That's what we want-- to compete with top programs for top talent and let others go elsewhere.

Very much this. We make too much out of getting in-state kids. I'd rather have talent, no matter where it comes from, than take a kid simply because he's from TN.

It's a down year for DL in Georgia. Especially with Chris Hinton going to Michigan due to his dad's relationship with Harbaugh. 2020 will be stronger with kids like; Miles Murphy, Jamil Burroughs and Nazir Stackhouse.

The most important thing is winning on the field. That will get us in doors of recruits anywhere in the country. If the best are in TN, I fully expect Pruitt will be on them, but if the best are elsewhere, then I expect he'll pursue them wherever they may be.

I understood that when Kristian Williams visited UT and worked out in the late spring/early summer timeframe, the staff shifted more of their focus toward him versus Tymon.
