in-state defensive tackle tymon mitchell tripped to tennessee for the first time since picking up an offer from the vols in december, as the 4-star prospect from franklin road academy got a chance to spend time with the new staff on rocky top.

The 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive tackle has quickly become of one jeremy pruitt’s top in-state targets, as tennessee is working hard to keep the vol legacy at home. In the last two months, mitchell has picked up offers from ut, stanford, georgia and alabama, among others.

“it was a good day. It was my first time looking at the academic center and the academic side of it,” mitchell told volquest. “i love that tennessee is close to home. It’s always been that tradition in my family. Four of five generations in my family coming up here. My great uncle was the first african american player up here. Lester mcclain.”

“i’m a need,” mitchell said. "they need lineman up here. They have five senior d-lineman this year, so there’s a necessity for d-lineman up here and (pruitt) sees me as one of them.”

the vols are recruiting mitchell as an interior lineman, viewing the 2019 prospect as a 3-or 5-technique prospect. Mitchell currently holds more than a dozen offers and this spring he’s juggling training for football and wrestling.

With so many new offers, mitchell is taking his recruitment slowly right now. He plans to visit debra campuses this spring, but said adamantly, “tennessee is definitely on my list. I’ll definitely be back here soon.”

— Tennessee, Stanford and Vanderbilt appear to be the three main contenders for three-star defensive tackle Tymon Mitchell of Nashville’s Franklin Road Academy. The 6-foot-2.5, 290-pound Mitchell has emerged as one of the Vols’ top in-state targets since getting an offer from Tennessee in December, and his latest trip to Knoxville on Saturday left him impressed with the Vols’ new staff. Mitchell’s great uncle is Tennessee legend Lester McClain, who was the first African-American to play for the Vols, and his family ties to the program are among the reasons he always has been interested in Tennessee. But his father also is a Vanderbilt graduate, and Mitchell remains intrigued by Stanford, a prestigious academic school where he also could play high-level football.

Now a 4 star on Rivals. And while I hate Vandy, they are doing more with less these days (at least on defense). I just get the feeling that the coach’s seat is warming way up there in Palo Alto.

Tymom is a very humble and hard working kid. I promise watching his growth has been a delight. He has bevome a leader in the DL group at NPA. Its not every day you get a kid with the talent and smarts of Tymon Mitchell. He'd definitely be a great get for UT and CJP. His family legacy at UT definitely outweighs his dad being a VU alumn. Kid lights up when talk about the Big Orange. On the poster saying Shaw is on the hot seat you're incorrect. Shaw is very safe and loved at Stanford.

Everything I've heard has pointed to Tennessee also being in the picture as the third legitimate contender, but it's no secret that Mitchell wouldn't mind going to an elite academic school. His dad is a Vanderbilt graduate, and Mitchell was wearing a Stanford hoodie when I saw him at a 7-on-7 tryout back in January. He's planning to visit Stanford, so that offer definitely was a big one for him. I think Tennessee still has a shot, but it's far from a given he ends up in Knoxville. The Vols are going to have to battle for him.

DL Tymon Mitchell quietly attended Tennessee's spring game yesterday and the Vols continue to make a big impression on the 2019 DT. This one is definitely shaping up to be a Tennessee-Stanford battle. In-state, SEC school vs. the academic prestige of the Cardinal.

Hopefully he had a chance to talk to Dobbs yesterday at the game.

I wonder what he's looking to study in college anyway. Hopefully something UT has a good program in.

Four-star defensive tackle Tymon Mitchell of Franklin Road Academy in Nashville, Tenn., returned to Tennessee on Saturday for the second time in less than two months, and he said the Vols still are among his current favorites, along with Stanford, Vanderbilt and Georgia. Mitchell also visited Georgia, Stanford and California earlier this month, and while Stanford remains a serious contender, after making the trip to California, he admitted it’s “harder to see myself being so far away without the option to get home.” Sources recently have suggested that Stanford and Tennessee might be the two teams to beat for Mitchell, with Vanderbilt — his father’s alma mater — also still in the hunt.

“it was a good visit, a good game,” mitchell said during sunday’s nike elite 11 regional at nashville’s montgomery bell academy. “it was the first time i’ve talked to (tennessee defensive line) coach (tracy) rocker personally in a while because, when i went up there the first time (after pruitt’s hiring), he wasn’t there, so that was good to talk to everybody, the players and everything. “(pruitt) got there and it feels like a different place. You’re up there around guys, and they genuinely want to be there. They love the coaches. They love what’s going on up there.”

“(rocker) just likes me, just envisioning what i can do in their defense and how i could impact the play,” said mitchell, who’s ranked the no. 352 overall prospect and no. 24 defensive tackle in the industry-generated 247sports composite for the 2019 class. “it looked like they’re a little lacking on the defensive line. That’s what they were saying the whole time — that they need d-linemen. They’ve got seniors this year, so they’ve got a huge need for d-linemen coming in, and that’s what i saw.”

“it was, like, 60,000 people there or something like that. That was crazy,” mitchell said. “i always love the atmosphere at tennessee. You already know when you go to tennessee, especially for a game, it’s going to be crazy, a good environment.”

“it was a good visit,” he said. "first time to be able to talk to all the coaches, so it was good to meet everybody, go out there and see everything and take a look for myself.” he said he doesn’t “really know, honestly,” whether he has an even higher opinion of stanford after his trip to palo alto, calif. “i mean, they didn’t move any higher on my list or anything,” mitchell said. “there’s different things i didn’t like. It wasn’t exactly like a home feel you get from being at tennessee or one of the other sec schools. The atmosphere, i’d say, was a little different. But, other than that, it was a good visit.” after traveling to california for himself, mitchell also admitted it’s now “harder to see myself being so far away without the option to get home.”

“(i like) just the level of success they have with individual guys, consistently putting guys into the draft, into the league, and everybody consistently out there coming out and doing well,” mitchell said. “i wouldn’t say (the academics are) tough to pass up. I know it’s still something that’s really important to me, so i took a hard look at that. But i also don’t want to make that the only reason i go somewhere, so i’ve just got to take everything in as a whole.”
