Blindfolded and staggering around trying to get something close.

Where on earth did Gundy come from? And did Currie know Gundy has already turned down Florida? Granted for not as much money ,but.....

If you've now got $8mil a year to spend, is Mike Gundy your first shot? Not sure there is a coach who is available that is worth $8 mil. Saban, Meyer, Petersen, Patterson, Fisher, Shaw, Franklin and Harbaugh are about it

And the donkey with running around blindly holding the pin is no other than John Currie, our rabidly inept Athletic Director!

I wonder if anyone has considered the possibility that this entire Currie/Schiano fiasco was designed to entrench mediocrity and to bulldoze the collective voices of UT fans generally and VN voices specifically.

What I mean by mediocrity is this: those at the top of the hierarchy desire to maintain their power (Haslem/Davenport/Currie) and as high level government bureaucrats, aren’t thrilled with or used to being accountable to the collective voices of those that they are (supposed) to serve. If you get a superstar HC then as his power increases those above him decreases.

This isn’t a perfect analogy but how many think that Saban and AL’s AD have equitable power positions? They serve Saban far more than he serves them. They and he know that if it comes down to a power struggle he can take his secret sauce for winning national titles somewhere else and there’s nothing AL’s AD can do about it.

So getting back to the mediocrity argument: what if the mission of those in power isn’t to build the program up into something Sabanesque but rather to get a warm body HC that can reliably produce an 8-4 or an occasional 9-3 season. Decent records to be sure but only good enough such that their power base remains intact. The collective voice of the fans is kept under control with the ever present “maybe next year”. A bad season or two and the cycle starts all over again.

Probably gamed this out a few too many steps but I keep getting the sense that there is much more to this entire saga than just a botched HC search/hire.

I'm sure you meant John Harbaugh. I think he'd be a good fit but wouldn't pay him that much. Also not sure if he's used to the recruiting grind which would mean he'd be heavily dependent on assistants.

Veiled reference for UT interest in McElwain?
