'26 TN CB Javonte Smith (Tennessee commit)

Ok ok, maybe I was being dumb.

Boom! Our lower ranked guys have played better under this staff.
Fans and scouts alike just had to watch film or go see a player in person 30 years ago to see how good they were.

Now our world has shrank, and we have a somewhat decent system known as star rankings. Fans love the stars.

Just remember the film don’t lie and if you like what you see that’s what matters. Because that’s exactly what Heupel and crew do.

And these recruiting sites don’t have the bandwidth to properly scout every HS player with some skill. There’s over 1,000,000 kids playing HS football in America. It’s impossible.

Seems like most of these types never play and end up transferring.

We always hope they end up being some sort of “diamond in the rough” but it never happens that way.

Not sure I can name many ranked in the 1000s to actually pan out for us, there could be a few that I’m just not thinking of.
Cam Sutton was a low 3 star. Ended up being a great player. Just a quick one off the top of my noggin.😀GBO

Speed. I’m good with low ranked and lightly recruited if they have speed and athleticism.

I am guessing this guy was prioritized as a ceiling pick, not a day 1 floor pick. One of many I see on our list that can easily climb up the star chart before signing day and has the size and speed to get it done. A target, not a fallback.

Anybody remember Jabari Greer, 5'10", 170, Jackson South Side, lightly recruited & state champ in track & field. Now in the Saints HOF.
I brought up his name a little while ago.

I wouldn’t put this kid at that level, but he’s (Smith) still a take all day

Greer was an NCAA Champion in track and field and Super Bowl Champion at CB.
One of the most underrated players we’ve had.
Too bad Martinez never got to coach him

This little detail gets missed. We aren't anywhere near the fallback stage. Guys they are taking now are ones they want. And with the portal, even the fallback stages is less defined than it used to be.

Javonte Smith looks like a player in his video, talented athlete with awareness, ball skills, and stud attitude. He appears to have excellent hand-eye coordination and as much or more speed as anyone else in the game. I think we'll see him on the field before a couple of the other CB recruits, and that is not a knock on them. I do think Smith is where he needs to be for learning to play on the next level and adding the extra muscle.
