TN can make a STATEMENT.

It's the height of fan ego to think you can be more right about something as nuanced as an assistant coach hire than the damn head coach.
By this logic all hires ever made by all HCs in the history of college football were correct and perfect. Therefore, Randy Sanders, Sal Sunseri, Larry Scott, and Dave Clawsen were all genius hires.

It's not that HCs are never wrong. It's the notion that there can only be one right hire, so you have to argue to the death for that one coach... even though you're actually an accountant.

That I would agree with. There are several OCs out there who would be major upgrades, both in terms of experience and track record, over Helton. Hopefully we don't follow our normal course of the last decade plus and just hire someone from within out of expediency/laziness. I don't think a reasonable argument can be made that the coach of the worst-performing group on the team, and the group that showed the least improvement over the course of the season, should be promoted to such an important position, for any reason, at this juncture.

Like several article have said, we need a leader on the offensive side of the ball not concepts. If you noticed on the sidelines many times this year we saw conflict which may be a sign that leadership was lacking. Hence, Helton left due to the conflict.

What is this obsession with Lane Kiffen? He has struggled at every place he has been. He still acts very childish and his results have not been good for awhile. The results at BAMA don't count...the were good before he came and no worse if not better after he left. He is in his third or fourth year at FAU and they ended the year 5-7. What screams gotta have him there. This along with his NCAA baggage is not worth it.
I didn't mean Kiffen. I meant Kingsbury guy or whoever. Kliff.

Our next OC, has to be HOME-RUN hire.
If we want to make a statement and be competitive like Bama we need to be THAT TEAM where the top minded football coaches go to.
If we take an up and comer or promote within inside, we will keep sliding down.
I'm pulling for Kilff right now.
I would take Kiffin before i would Tee Martin or Dooley. Saban does it he hires who he wants. Kiffin, Steve Sark. If Pruitt waits to hire a OC then he is waiting for a team that is still playing for their season to end. Probaly a QB coach at Bama.

Look at all the different OCs at Bammer and they keep winning. They have a great QB again which makes it easier. My point is,you can't have a great offense without great players, mainly OL. We seem to be upgrading in that area, which will make an OC look much better.I would have hated to be a play caller with our OL 2017 or 18
Pruitt will get a guy he wants, and recruiting will make both coaches better.

We need a home run hire. Absolutely.

That said, I fully expect to be consulting google to figure out who the heck they’ve hired.

You really cant make that up!!! What in the wide wide world of Sports makes you think he would come back to UT as an OC??????
I wouldn't want him as a HC, OC or ticket taker. He screwed this program. Why don't you want Gruden......that would be just as stupid!
It would be funny if it weren't so sad!!!

Guys. This is Tennessee. It's Will Friend. MAYBE Weinke. Then a quick staff shuffle, and a quiet positional hire to fill the open slot.

That's how we roll.

Meanwhile, I fully expect the SEC office to miraculously pronounce Freeze 'cleared' after our decision, and he will end up an 'analyst' with the Gumps.

That's how the SEC and Bammer roll.

Yep.

It has never been Tennessee's M.O., even when we were good, to do "home run" hires.

Traditionally, we, UF, nor UGA makes homerun, big splash, known big name type hires. The closest we ever got to doing this was when we brought Johnny Majors home .... and then found a way to hire a no name at the time on his staff to replace him.

Kiffin Is already a head coach who will have opportunities at a major program. There is zero incentive for him to come here and that is why he will not be offered.

There's no way the present day UT AD is going to allow Lane Kiffin on his staff.

But that no name played at UT, coached at UT at a high level, had the love and respect of his players at the time. Who on staff fits that description right now?
No one.
So we gotta leave the reservation and bring in a new battle proven chief

shoop was the biggest name on the market last time UT replaced a coordinated. It’s unfair to say they don’t pursue homerun or big splash hires.
