'26 TN ATH Joel Wyatt

He needs to commit to Tennessee and figure it out naturally when he gets here. And in my unprofessional opinion, Tennessee knowing he probably won’t contribute til year 2 should give him a fall or spring to try his desired position and then settle in at edge if he doesn’t make progress where he wants to. IMO he’s still too raw an athlete to get fixated on any one position. Someone gonna take advantage of what they know about his recruitment and use it to sign him and probably leave him in a worse situation by year 2. Come here where your family, friends, hometown, and relationships are for you and in a position to help you and figure it out here.
For those first 2 years, does UT pay him the premium salary that is required for EDGE rushers?

Our Leo group is very deep, I think he could be here 2-3 years before getting any meaningful time. In this day and age he would probably not stay, if he wants safety, offer safety rates if others are willing to go crazy, so be it.
Maybe.

You get on the field early though if you’re good enough. Lots of young guys have got snaps early. Also from Eric’s post it seems we really believe in him at that position and seem to be willing to put money on being able to make him a great player there.

He’s not getting on the field as a Leo until he’s in his 2nd or 3rd year on campus. Unless Jordan Ross busts he’s a wasted scholarship at Leo with the transfer portal

James Pearce, Josh Josephs, Darrell Taylor, and Byron Young all say hi. All of these guys came in under 210 lbs and turned out great at LEO.
Byron Young also opted out his first year on campus under Pruitt. Darrell Taylor sat behind Barnett, James Pearce was behind Josephs and Young as a true freshman as well. You’re kind of proving my point. You can’t come into the SEC at 200 pounds and play on the LOS. The only difference is those guys didn’t walk into a room that was loaded with 4-5 stars when they got here

So your logic is avoid good competition at the top schools (UGA, TX, tOSU, Texas and A&M) are all loaded at EDGE as well, hence why he has been looking at Vandy and UNC besides us. Instead play a position at 6'4.5 is the better option since it is an easier path to play at UT is his best choice?

How many 6'4.5 safeties start in the NFL again? Wyatt can try to play safety at UT but he is highly unlikely to make it to the NFL at safety at his size. Sean Taylor and Taylor Mays are about the only 2 jumbo safeties i can think of that made it to the NFL and they were both a lot faster than Wyatt is coming out of HS. I guess you can throw in Kam Chancellor as well.

The gamecocks just put a monster jumbo safety in the NFL. 2nd round pick and had 4.4 speed like this kid supposedly does. Kobe Bryant’s nephew is a 6’5 5 star safety committed to Oregon, would’ve been nice to been apart of his recruitment as well. Nothing wrong with letting a freak be a freak every once in a while

Byron Young's first season was in 2021 under Heupel. He wasn't on the team under Pruitt. I agree on an edge needing to be bigger than 200 pounds though.

No, I wouldn’t look at it that way. Probably would see what others are trying to pay and try to match or come close to it. If he wants to play a different position he can accept less than we were willing to pay, if it was more than others.

Emmanwori is a big safety but Wyatt is already an inch taller and is not as fast. Emmanwori was also a 3 star and his only P4 offer was USCeast as Charlotte was his other finalist. He played LB in high school as a senior at Irmo. I’ve watched Wyatt run and he wasn’t as fast as the freshman from Tyner is. He’s fast but not blazing speed fast. Hes also 17 and still might grow, so you prob need to project him to be 6’5 or so and 215-220 by the time he even gets on campus. Once on campus he’s prob going to gain 15-20 more lbs and that would put him as a 6’5 240lb safety. Kyle Hamilton was 6’3 as a senior and 190, Wyatt is already bigger. Maybe he doesn’t grow at all anymore, but if you recruit him as a safety you better hope he doesn’t, because he’s got a very good chance to outgrow the position and at that point you have one less safety for depth. I would love to have him at TN and truthfully I’d lie to him and tell him he’s playing safety and once he gets on campus and shows up 6’5 220 and can’t play the position at that point we have a discussion. I’m paying him as a safety and if he chooses to go elsewhere due to that more luck to him!

I don’t know - but I had been hearing rumors that the money alumni were tired of them “recruiting” athletes. Keon Johnson put the school on the map athletically. Since then they have been building their sports teams and their test score numbers have gone down because of some of the students they brought in. When I saw her credentials, I knew they were bringing her in to get rid of sports being good. It’s a shame too because my nephew had a great experience there
playing basketball and football. I didn’t necessarily want Joel there (I think this more will help him develop), but they were building a program on Friday nights were becoming fun.
