No way that thing was staged. You could hear Smith yelling about keeping his family out of your f------ mouth. Chris Rock crossed the line making fun of the dude's wife, but I think he could have waited until a later time to clock him instead of on national TV. I guess some lessons are tough to learn--don't make fun of how a guy's wife looks on national TV.

People from all sides are attacking Will Smith for it... shame. Personally, I love seeing a man stand up for his wife. Don't care how mild the joke was or what the history is in their marriage or any of that. The man saw that his wife wasn't amused and stood in the gap. Well done by Will, IMO.

And I'm not trying to be some kind of tough guy or a knight in shining armor or whatever... truth is I probably wouldn't have had the balls to do what Will did. I just think it was the appropriate response. My wife disagrees... she thinks it was thin-skinned.

He could have stood up for her without slapping Rock on live television. The show was moving on and he could have addressed it backstage like an adult.

I like Will Smith fine and my general opinion of him hasn’t changed but he went about defending his wife the wrong way in this moment.

I saw an interesting take from Shannon Sharpe on this. Culturally, Sharpe feels, this is the highest level of disrespect possible. I don't know what was in Will's head but if that holds true it was an intentional decision to cause the highest level of embarrassment for Chris Rock.

I might add that the pictures/videos of him at the afterparty demonstrates how truly sorry he was for his choice. Just goes to show Hollywood is a cesspool no matter how much lipstick they put on it...

It was absolutely not staged. Chris Rock was flustered and shot. He he leaned in thinking perhaps he was going to embrace him or kind of trash talk back to him. He was stunned by the embrace and you could tell when Will Smith was shouting back to him that it was no joke.

Several body language experts have reviewed the videos and concluded the same thing. It was simply a self-promotion stunt. Another dead giveaway was when right afterward Rock proclaimed, "That was the greatest night in the history of television."
