Losing to uscjr, Florida pulling off a very unexpected win, and UT eventually losing the East and an almost sure spot in ATL may be the best thing that could have happened to UT football in a while and could very well be THE turning point for CBJ. It may just be the flame that brings Butch out of mediocrity and into the elite category among SEC coaches. Think about it, win the East this year, CBJ would have taken that to the bank for years and could have possibly just cruised for the next few years. This near devasting failure to win the East is going to aspire him to hit the recruiting trail like crazy and come back even harder next year with a pretty deep and talented roster and a qb that is just as good if not better than Dobbs. Adversity man, gotta love it. The verdict is not in yet. The good thing is we WILL know, without a doubt, if CBJ is the man for the job within the next 2 years. And if he's not, enjoy the 8-10 win seasons and decent bowl games we get in the next 2 seasons. If he is the man, enjoy consecutive Eastern division championships and possibly SEC/National in the next 2 seasons.

I'm so proud of this team winning the NCAA COL! Really proud of seniors like Danny O'Brien who led by example and kept their nose clean these past 4 years! Next year doesn't look so bad either as long as Hurd doesn't declare for the draft.

I think it's a little late in the Jones Era for there to be a "turning point" just because another team didn't bail us out.

I agree with the OP. A lot of people are already predicting losses to UGA, UF, Bama, and LSU next year. I don't necessarily agree with 3 of those predictions. However if our D doesn't improve the Georgia Tech game will definitely expose it.

I think a lot depends on what we get at the QB position. If Malone stays our WR core should be fine. Could possibly even consider moving JJ to defense especially if Calloway is ready to roll.

These are all decisions CBJ has to make along with coaching staff changes. This is what will show if CBJ has what it takes to be successful here. I'm rooting for him because right now his success is the quickest route to an SEC Championship. We shall see.....

Instant gratification generation I guess.

Other than Saban & Meyer who are all of the 3 year rebuild/success stories?

Exactly and it's gotten to a point where I'm not sure what these folks expect. I guess you are either Nick Saban or Derek Dooley in their minds. I've said before and I'll say it again: if VN existed 20 years ago, Fuller would have been fired and we would've never won a MNC.

Next year our team will be about 93-94 OVR
In all my dynasty seasons a 93-94 team on Heisman difficulty is for sure 11 wins. Maybe more depending on how the 97 OVR bama game goes.

Sorry OP, not winning the east has no chance of being the best that could have happened. I get the point.

All us Loyal Vol Fans are in for the long haul. 8-10 wins while winning a bowl is better than the worst run we had with Dooley, but it's not even close to what we all want. Win the east with a chance at the playoffs with a win in Atlanta(that's the SECCG for volnbama, not the chicken fill-a kickoff classic).

Go Vols!

Instant Gratification? We have been out of relevance for over 10 years. Anyone who still cares enough to visit this message board after the past 10 years is in NO WAY expecting instant gratification.

Butch had his chance this year. We will know a lot based on the recruiting numbers, but I expect a drop off in that as well.

Next year will be BRUTAL, as it will be a much more difficult schedule.

It probably won't hold, but Muschamp has a top 25 class coming in to what looked like a dumpster fire last year. He's an excellet defensive coach and he may have learned a thing or two from his first failed outing as a HC.

In other words, it's probably not going to get any easier from here. O line and secondary coaching absolutely must be addressed. Qb coach wouldn't hurt either.

Do we have any coaches who have been in a championship program to compare to? If you have never coached a championship team, how do you know what it takes to get there? Injuries notwithstanding.
I didn't like the CBJ hire, but realized that was the best we could do, given the situation we were in. He started recruiting at a high level, so I started thinking he might be the coach we need. Everyone seems to be on his backside, but I personally, don't know enough to say whether he's the man to do the job or not. I HOPE he is because I don't want to go through another coaching search anytime soon.

Mostly agree with you. But, GT doesn't have to expose our defense, that's already been done. With their run game,,, LOOK OUT!!!

What I was actually leading to was if you subscribe to the theory that the first year in a new D scheme is bad, than I would expect our D to be more of a factor next year and find their identity. Lord knows a lot of players got some early experience this year which we weren't counting on.

But that triple option though haha......

Wrong. So wrong. We were dominant in the 90's except for 1 8-4 season.
