Sept. 28, 1985. Auburn visited Knoxville 2-0 and No. 1 in the country. Running back Bo Jackson was just beginning an eventual Heisman campaign, having rushed for 495 yards against Louisiana and Southern Miss, but he managed only 80 yards in 17 carries against Johnny Majors' Vols, who bolted to a 24-0 lead and cruised 38-20.

That's the last time the Vols beat a No. 1 team.

When Georgia and Tennessee play, at least one of them is usually awesome. Only three times in the past 40 years have they both been unranked at the time of their game.

Great game that was. Also, last year Alabama was ranked #3 in the AP but #1 in the Coaches Poll. I’ll take the #1 wins any way I can get ‘em.

That’s interesting that only 3 times both have met as unranked teams.

Man miss the days when UGA was more or less an afterthought.

I was there. Tony Robinson took the SI cover that was intended for Bo.

If it was going to happen I think this year is probably one of the best opportunities considering that Georgia isn't as dominant as normal.

Next to my cousin Junebug, Bo Jackson is probably the best athlete to ever live

That team was a physical and a mentally tough bunch. They literally made Bo quit. I'd love to think this bunch has some of the same moxy, but frankly, I've not seen even so much as a glimmer of it.

We beat the number 1 team last year in this matchup.. Beating number 1 teams aren’t what elite programs are concerned with. Last year we were the number 1 team in this matchup and we couldn’t complete a drive for all the false starts.

I actually prefer strong and deep SEC Tennessee just needs to do their part and be competitive as well.

That was really only the 90's. We didn't play alot before that but they had the series lead by a game or two when we went to divisions then we went on a run. The 90's were UGA's worst decade since the Civil rights legislation passed and our best. Since 2000 we've beat them 6 times.

Regardless, I've got a better feeling about us in this game than I have in several years. Their defense is not near as good in the front 7 as it has been. We might actually be able to run some which is a huge key. Their offense is good near unstoppable when it's clicking but Neyland can hopefully disrupt it some. Their team is up and down emotionally and they've been on 3 games in a row. They are due to be down. We need some turnovers and the game of their lives from the pass rush group. If UGA brings their A game though hopefully we can keep it respectable because athletically their A game is still better than ours.

Alabama was ranked number 3 when we beat them.

True. I was trying to joke about TN being ranked #1 in the playoff rankings when we went to Athens last year. We beat ourselves, so we should get credit for defeating a #1 team. (In my defense, I was drinking last night)

I find it hard to believe that no LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, FSU or whoever was ranked #1 in some poll. Was this dumb article talking about whatever poll Auburn was #1 in exclusively? Because the only ranking that matters these days did not exist in those days.
