This was Ole Miss' problem this year. Quick scoring, but so was the other team, which is a Big 12 type of football. Defensive fronts must rush the passer without blitzes to combat this type of offensive speed. Blitzing leaves the middle wide open for hot routes. regardless of who he hires to run the defense, he must recruit aggressive down lineman. without that, a defensive coordinator is as good as fired.I want to start by saying I don't think this was an entirely bad hire, but one thing that is concerning to me is time of possession under Heupel's offenses. It looks like his offenses hold the ball around 8 minutes less than his opponents. That can be extremely taxing on your defense, especially in the SEC. This aspect makes the DC hire extremely important and even then it's hard to say how this type of offense will do in the SEC as far as wins and losses go. Sure there should be plenty of points scored, but will we be able to stop anyone in the 4th quarter? What is everyone's opinion on this?
Is it possible we have a coach that can adjust his offense, even during the game, to what the score dictates
Do you not think Heupel is aware of this and will prepare the defense and hire a coordinator that complements his style of play?
ToP is one of the most overrated stats in all of football. Score, get stops, and keep the other guys guessing/overwhelmed. That is done offensively and defensively. If your offense is explosive, it should put up as many points as it can, as quickly as it can. The defense is responsible for getting off the field.
All I’m saying is, the defense isn’t as pressured to get off the field, if the offense is putting up points. That's the point. When they're tired they can't get off of the field. That's more exaggerated when you have a lack of depth. That's why pro and college coaches talk about controlling the clock.

What is taxing is the other team trying to score 30 points in the 4th quarter to try to tie the game. Our defenses have been playing 60-65 % of the games anyway. That is because the offense has not been getting 1st downs, much less TDS.I want to start by saying I don't think this was an entirely bad hire, but one thing that is concerning to me is time of possession under Heupel's offenses. Tennessee’s O and D were not good.
Tennessee has upgraded their O simply by this hire.
Will their D be any better or worse.....I don’t know.....but the O will be.
Worrying about TOP doesn’t matter “as much” when you are scoring. I mean Tennessee could go 3 and out quickly and not score. Or Tennessee could hold the ball for 7 minutes in a drive and not score.........scoring quickly (or at all) is better than that.
Just my opinion.....but O line and overall roster is a much bigger concern right now.
He needs a good DC. That's for sure. And with all due respect to Steele, he needs someone in tune with playing D opposite a high speed O.I want to start by saying I don't think this was an entirely bad hire, but one thing that is concerning to me is time of possession under Heupel's offenses.
