Time for Merk

Nico isn't that great. Move on and don't look back. To this point he is on par with the Eric Ainges of the world. For $4MM he better be the next Peyton, cam newton,Tebow, tommy Frazier, etc
Why? The backup QB from Penn Station received that to go to Missouri.
That's the market now. That's what it costs for a top tier QB.
If I'm Faison-I might think " will TN pay me what I'm worth and what the market bears"
I don't understand why people are freaking out. This is what QB's are getting paid. It's not like he's asking double. He's asking for what Lagway,Sellers,Beck are getting

Love Nico, but I’m starting to think he doubted the development from our staff, and that gave him the green light to try and get more money somewhere else
This could be the ugly truth as well. It's entirely possible Nico could be frustrsted about the receiving corp and do not buy the staff's vision for him. Maybe he feels he could perform better in a regular styled offense.

Nico was making at least 2 million a year and wanted 4 for this year. Let somebody else pay that to a quarterback with his stats and big game stats. If he had been lighting it up we probably would pay. Teams will quit overpaying average to slightly above average quarterbacks once it backfires on them and it will. Spending money wild and loose can backfire. Spend in on production not talent or upside. GBO

That's not what will happen. It never happens. Teams will continue to pay for potential. Just like the NFL. They and the NBA draft on potential and most of the recruiting in college football is based off potential.
You're either on the front end and can see and willing to pay for potential or you get the scraps.
This is not new in sports-just new in college football

Id rather be elite at football. Using other sports to talk smack to other schools is a consolation prize when you're not good at football. Haven't watched a full baseball game in my life. Men's Basketball is the only other sport I somewhat care about and it's nowhere near the level of football. Not saying you have to agree but I do believe there is a reason Neyland holds 100k and TBA holds 20k.
You sure are missing out on what actual winning looks like. There is also a reason Lindsey Nelson Stadium is expanding. The baseball program is the one carrying its weight and doesn’t have a bunch of prima donnas. Vitello is the best coach in America and brings in much easier kids to root for.

Show me where Lagway or Sellers commanded such figures?

No way you can hit the portal.and get someone else ready for the season -no way Merk could/would be better prepared than Nico for the upcoming season.
Losing Nico will cost us recruits,a .500 season, and top players who see TN will not pay market value.
Nico making 2mil and Sellers and Lagway making almost 4.
Why as a top recruit, would i go to TN if they don't wanna pay?
If I'm Faison-I might be looking somewhere else. If they will not pay Nico competitively (with Lagway and Sellers,Beck), why are they going to pay me?

Lots of guesses there, Nico may completely fall on his face elsewhere and people will see why the Vols did not want to play ball with him anymore. There is a right way and a wrong way, this will follow Nico his entire career.

Can’t wait to see Merk and Mac battle it out.

They may both be better than Nico and the reason the Vols “aren’t blinking” on these “negotiations”…
I really do think they have talked it out and came to a conclusion that Nico has more reps but that might be the only thing that he has over Merk at this point Nico was real good vs Chattanooga and the OOC but was below average vs SEC. They probably said beyond the live bullets it's close to a wash or they would not let him go. From all I've heard their done with him. Be like Georgia just move on like when Carson Beck left, they just said we have repped the backup for a reason. and moved on without much turmoil and Beck was way better than Nico.

According to reporting THATS what the contract negotiations were centering around. This wouldn’t have blown up if him and his team would have played contract negotiations normally. Instead, they do this….

I'm starting to think the Coach was hoping Nico would be the guy, but did not and does not think he is. The family opened up the door for the Vols to walk away from Nico. Save the money and get ready for next.

Glad they won the Natty. I wish them the best, but baseball doesn't do anything for me. Football is the cash cow and always will be. Doesn't make sense to not go all in on it.

I don’t care about cash cow. I care about teams and programs with unity and have proven how to win. Football isn’t going to win anything in this environment. The teams with the most money will win: Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, and Notre Dame. That will be your usual suspects going forward. Tennessee will make the playoff more times than not but no realistic chance of winning the title.

I'd rather see Merk play than keep upping Nico's pay. Also, I'm tired of my wife trying over and over to say Iamaleava correct every football Saturday. I'm sure she can say Merklinger correctly the first time. lol

Because to this point he is not worth it. If he was one of the best in the conference then pay him. He is middle of the pack. He has some upside, but to this point he has yet to show it on a regular basis. Let someone else overpay for him.

We have some very talented underclassmen and they might be better than him.

Merk is in the exact same position as Nico was. Mostly sat his first year, little playing time, but highly touted qb. He might just be the guy that it clicks for him when he’s on the field. He may just see the field and coverages better than Nico. Apparently has looked really good in practice. Still a fall camp to go. Not sure what QB would be out there at this point.
Yep, Hendon got beat out in practice by Hypes eyes and if Joe had not got hurt, we would not have had our best QB in a long time. I would love to have the same story with Merk as we did with Hendon. Say Merk balls out we would be saying just think if Nico hadn't extorted the team for more money Merk would have been backup all year and we'd never known.
