Most of the criticism is fair and part of the business when you work at a place like Tennessee, but let’s not lose sight of the big picture.

This is the first year where his defense hasn’t improved from the previous year. Also, 3 of MSU’s 4 TD drives were 30 yards or less. Did I get frustrated with our defense yesterday? Yes. But I still think he’s really, really good.

Our defense is also the reason we won. When our offense wasn't able to get going through either mistakes or official incompetence, our defense dug in and created multiple defensive touchdowns and when the game was on the line the hunkered down twice and told the MSU offense "no. You move." Lebby knows our offense and he passed that knowledge on to their DC. I didn't see a lot a lot of open 3-3-5 looks last night and they made us pass. Defense played good complimentary football.

I think he’s a solid DC…just don’t agree with his in game adjustments all the time. It took us until the 4th quarter to change the way we played the run

It's tough to stop offenses in the SEC, especially on the road. And this offense was humming coming into our game. Fans tend to view defenses strictly in terms of the yards or points they give up and ultimately the success or failure of the defense will be determined by whether you win or lose the game. Our defense has yet to play their best game. They definitely will keep improving over the course of the season. There aren't any defenses in the SEC shutting teams out on the road.

So many things in life are about your perspective on them.

The only reason the defense hasn't "improved" is because we had one of the best defenses in the nation last year (FPI had us ranked #4 on D for 2024) and we've had a lot of injuries this season.

Banks has been great. Any criticisms of him this year have been silly. The D won this game for us and most of the points given us were due to mistakes on offense and STs.

I think this game showed why Tennessee is usually able to put a lot of points on the board. It is a difficult offense to defend and is more difficult to when your opponent runs the same offense. They know our defensive weaknesses and took advantage of them.

I have no problem with Banks and like him as our DC. Yesterday was an odd duck of a game. Our TE must be a stud at setting in Volleyball the way he tipped those passes high into the air. The turnovers were mostly all short field opportunities for State if I remember correctly. Without the D's key stops and turnovers, we don't win that game for sure.

Athletes made the difference in that game probably. We had better ones.

He’s far from the worst and I get agitated with him but to be fair he doesn’t really have all the pieces this year. We desperately need atleast one of our corners back. We are very very fortunate that miss st player dropped the walk in Td. Teams are going to continue to exploit that this season.

Agree 100%. Another thought, if he makes that run defense adjustment earlier in the game, that gives State their opportunity to adjust and we don't have that "chess move" in the 4th quarter.

Points allowed -

Syracuse - 26
Georgia - 44 (Bama held them to 21. Austin Peay 28)
UAB - 24 ( inb4 it was backups)
MSU - 34

I'm ok with Banks. He's a decent DC. Great? Nope

He definitely deserves some criticism, some of it is not silly

Chess move? You mean DeSean Bishop to the House for 25 yards on our first offensive overtime play?

Check and Mate, Mr. Clanga-Clanga.

Bend don't break. They had excellent field position all night it seems but the run defense was ehhh. He adjusted late but goodness they were killing us on the ground. I'm still baffled at the time management. If we lose that game in OT, a majority of threads are about that.

I think people need to look at drive summaries for some perspective

MSU scoring drives

TD - 5 plays 20 yards after a muffed punt
TD - 15 plays 75 yards (this one was frustrating)
FG - 8 plays 51 yards
TD - 4 plays 26 yards
FG - 6 plays 54 yards
TD - 5 plays 17 yards

They had one TD drive that was more than 30 yards. One back breaking TD drive and 2 long drives that we made them settle for 3.

This is what I’ve been repeatedly responding to the “defense sucks” posts. We basically spotted them 21 points on a short field. If the final was 34-13 and the defense was responsible for 14 of our points we’d be praising them right now.

Bothwell gave us fits on the edge but he’s a stud and that was their gameplan. We did however completely shut down and sack Shapen 5 times.

Gave up less than 400 yards. Those short drives made it look worse than it was.

Banks is far from great. I’ve seen too many 3rd and 8+’s being converted against his defense. He is solid. Solid doesn’t cut it at Tennessee. At Oregon, Clemson, South Carolina, Colorado, solid cuts it, not here.
