I think the claim that we only have one SEC defensive player is overblown.
Malik Jackson, Janzen Jackson, and possibly Walker are potentially NFL players.
Having to start them this year was premature, but Herman Lathers, Marsalis Teague, Eric Gordon, Corey Miller, and Jacques Smith are all legit SEC players. I think a case can be made for Waggner and Brewer as well.
I thought I would address this since it was metioned. Most all the coaches really liked Kiffin and his approach to revitalizing our program and he believes Kiffin can flat out coach. The main difference that Chaney sees between the two is that Kiffin was only really concerned about what happened within the football program and that is where character issues with players came into play. Whereas, Dooley is concerned about how the football program represents UT and the players actions on and off the field. He has a lot of respect for Dooley and believes he will be very successful.

Malik Jackson could be ALL SEC at DE, not tackle.
Walker will be lucky to make a practice squad IMO.
Lathers, premature starter is a nice way of saying he isnt good enough.
Waggner may run a 4.9 forty
Brewer has to learn how to tackle and play safety.
Smith and Miller can be good just need time, weren't ready this year.
Teague has talent but has a lot to learn also.
Gordon is the biggest question mark, who knows?
JMO.
EVERYBODY is fast when running down the sideline! All those standing bodies make a 4.8 body look like a 4.3. I remember how fast I was as a kid when I was running through the woods....Not sure that I understand the Neal is slow quote..when he caught the 2 touchdown passes out of the backfield the guys was screaming down the sidelines..

Been saying all along that Poole was average at best, Neal just doesnt seem to have the mentality to be good enough, we need RB's who think no one can stop them. An average RB who thinks that way can become a beast.

Walker probably won't make it in the NFL, but he could if he stays healthy, which has been an issue. And I agree about Malik at DE rather than DT.
However, you're being way too hard on young players. Very few guys get the opportunity to step in play in the SEC, let alone start, when they are a freshman or sophomore.
Brewer hasn't played football in 4 years. He'll only get better gets reps, and he's shown significant improvement in every game. Both Teague and Gordon joined the program in 2009 and are seeing their first live game action. Both have tremendous upside.
Lathers is a redshirt sophomore, and he's probably the best tackler of our current linebackers with the exception of Reveiz. He has the moxie and physical talent to start for the next two years. Give him credit for starting at MLB and OLB as a freshman and sophomore, despite a blood condition.
And, according to Rivals, Waggner ran a 4.51 when he was recruited. That sounds about right to me.
