Throw out the tuition

I have a thought which may be completely wrong, but it's a thought.

If we keep going down this path, I could see a day where instead of being the University of Tennessee Volunteers, it could be that the football and basketball teams are affiliated with the University, but the players are employees rather than students. It's completely semi pro, players are under contract. Guys who can't cut it in NFL can stay and play however long. I mean, if they are employees WHY do they have to be students? That will be the argument. Its the only logical conclusion based on how this is unfolding.

Like y'all, I LOVE college football. Yes, the NCAA crapped on the players. They should have received a portion of TV earnings and been able to make a slice of their jersey sales, etc. You know, the ENTIRE RESASON we did NIL, not this pay for play mess. But this is gross. Its just not the same. Yes, I'll still watch. Yes I'll still somewhat try to keep track of who we're going after in the portal, even though I don't with high school recruiting anymore.

I don't know, I just wish we had some logical rules and guard rails in place.

Lets see how the Arky situation is going to turn out suing Nico's brother. If they are successful with this it hopefully will stop some of this transfers just for $ if the player has to return NIL $ paid to the school they are leaving.
Not gonna happen. NIL doesn't come from the school. The school has no legal recourse.

There is no semi pro. It's either pro or it's not.

Let's see how Arkansas recruiting looks also.

I recall aTm had a transferring player call them out on social media telling others to be careful of their NIL deals before they signed them. Apparently aTm tried or did "claw back" some of that big NIL they paid guys.

It's not a good look for recruiting if you're known to sue guys who transfer out.

You're correct that it's gross but without Congress giving "college athletics" Antitrust protection, I'm not even sure pro works unless they affiliate with the NFL, NBA, and MLB to piggyback on their Antitrust Exemptions.

I'm also completely against UT, which is an academic institution, owning pro sports franchises. It has nothing to do with the academic mission of the university.

Currently EVERYONE sues the NCAA when they try to regulate NIL or transfers, including Tennessee and UT. Apparently UT likes how things are going and we're remarkably successful in the football, basketball, and baseball.

It's gross, but it's working out well for us.

UT is primarily a fund raising institution. Without that, academics would exist.
Everything else is secondary, no matter what the mission statement says.

Football is responsible for north of $200 million per year. That cash cow isn't going away.

Conferences will soon go away, since the small-budget schools can't compete with the big money schools. Teams will be separated like minor league classes like in baseball (A, AA, and AAA). Just my prediction.

It is indeed a matter of time before the bottom layers of the major conferences peel off and end football because they will have no hope of competing and the gap between the haves and the have nots will just be too great. Then people stop coming to their games and revenue dries up and its just not economically feasible to continue.

Think Vandy, Mizzou, maybe South Carolina after that. They'll never field a team that can compete with 'bama, UGA, Texas. And as the blowouts get worse and worse, and revenue plummets.... a vicious cycle.

That ignores the revenue sharing big bucks that schools in the P4 (especially the SEC and BIG make).

Rutgers and Vandy are rarely competitive in football, but they make tons of money from the conference TV contracts. They aren't going to give that up easily, or quickly.

The only exceptions in the near future seem to be Clemson and FSU due to their settlement with the ACC that gives them a disproportionate share of ACC FB TV revenue, and that eliminates their GOR issues if they decide to leave the conference.

Wrong on all counts.

They have the right to renegotiate whenever they wish. They can either get more money, back down, or leave, depending on how the negotiations go. It's no different than anyone in the business world doing the same thing.

The portal? It has to be open at least twice due to the playoffs and bowl games.. unless you want even fewer of the best athletes to play in those games.

Disrupted rosters are a fact imof life. The NCAA old rules that prevented it broke federal law.

Honor what part of it? The schools don't currently pay the athletes a cent of salary. NIL is between the collectives and the athletes. By NCAA rules, private NIL can't be tied to a specific school. Ergo, no contract with the school exists.

Scholarships are for one season at a time, and that excludes postseason play. Bowls and playoffs are considered exhibition games by NCAA rules. As soon as the regular season is over, so is the football athlete's obligation.

If you ever changed jobs because you wished, you're being hypocritical.

Why do you advocate Communist style control of the lives of people that you don't even know?
Then don’t complain when we simply don’t pay 3rd string players first string money. Many aren’t that greedy but some are. Again I am all for them getting pay, and as I have defended all aren’t after top dollar exclusively. At the same time fans shouldn’t gripe when we don’t pay a marginal player top dollar. All I can say is go get it if somebody is willing to overpay. I will say even pro players are saying some players demands are total cray cray. I predict many of these role players will come out on the short end of things sometimes. Just like Nico he is now making what he deserves, less than what he was making at UT. Some of the more greedy players are in for a rude awakening when the get to the NFL. All I am saying is why does NIL even do contracts if they are just going to be violated by ones constantly looking for more money. I predict NIL’s will adjust, at some point they aren’t going to take massive hits and absorb huge losses. At the end of the day I cheer for the Vols and the ones wearing the uniform and I am not caught up in who’s going where and how much money they are getting. So again keep it like it is, I was just saying it’s a shame that a segment of young players don’t put more thought in their decisions. But hey let’s roll like we’re rolling, I am here for football saturdays in Neyland. I trust our administration can handle the navigations.GBO

I don't complain about that at all.
I have no control over who suits up for UT or what NIL they get. I am in favor of them being able to get fair market value, and to let the market establish what that is for each individual.

Schools are always going to be connected with the football program. Look at what has happened to minor league baseball, more and more top players are going to universities. Minor league baseball has no big supporting fan bases. They generate minimal revenue. The minor league semi pro concept folks keep yapping about does not make near the money. If college football breaks away from the schools like some are saying would lose a ton. Are they going to still play in Neyland and Ann Arbor? The base fans follow the schools, heck even most players still take school seriously despite what some say on here. The year before last Tennessee had like it’s highest gpa ever. Major schools are never going to let go of their revenue maker, and if they break away from colleges they will sink just like minor league baseball or semi pro leagues that aren’t great revenue makers. The majority of college football fans are attached to the schools and the traditions, without them the money would not be there. Now some may call it semi pro because they are now making money, but they are still connected to the University and play for the University. Heck folks have been getting paid way before the NIL. GBO

You're arguing two false premises there

1. You're arguing against something I didn't say. I didn't say that the college sports model would separate from the schools if it goes to a pro model. In fact, I've stated the exact opposite many times. To quote my earlier comments; "The schools aren't going to give up that cash cow.

2. Your statement ignores that CFB isn't structured anything like minor league baseball. The minors are a farm system for the MLB parent clubs. In CFB, the FBS schools ARE the parent clubs, but they have no farm system

That makes your post a false equivalence on both counts.

I didn’t mean to have your post pinned to my post. It wasn’t intended to get directed at you. I wasn’t directing anything toward you. I was talking in generalities. I am aware how the baseball farm system what’s left of it is different. Your right the schools are the parent clubs. I was talking to the few that have acted like they will separate. I was just saying that isn’t happening. Again I didn’t mean to quote your post, that was by accident. GBO
