here are yesterday's observations:

1. The SEC West is putrid. Those teams shouldn't be allowed in the SEC Tournament, let alone the NCAAs.
2. Stan Heath is Buzz Peterson. They are equally capable of coaching in the SEC.
3. Tony Bennett has had as good a first year as any coach I can ever remember. What he has done at Wazzu is nothing short of amazing.
4. "Say It Right" by Nelly Furtado is now officially the greatest strip club song of all time. The dancers have that one down pat.
5. Chris Lofton has done an amazing job expanding his game. I still don't think he's an NBA player, but he's much closer now than he was a year ago.

OK, now it's off to see LBJ take on the Wadeless Heat.

I was thinking the same thing regarding Lofton. He's had flashes of it all year, but that first half yesterday was one of the best halves I've seen him play. I'm not sure if he's completely over the ankle injury, but it looked like night and day from the last game to yesterday.

Hat, other than size, what do you think Lofton really needs to concentrate on improving from now until NBA draft time to be a legit player? Serious question

Lofton will need to continue to improve his ballhandling to stick in the NBA. At his size, he will have to play some at the point.

He really needs to gain some consistency when driving as well, imo. I don't see him utilize much of a midrange game either and he doesn't rebound much.

1. Ballhandling
2. Midrange game
3. Consistent driving
4. Improve rebounding/defense

If Lofton continues to improve his game next season, there will be a place on an NBA roster for him.

1. True. Hard to pick a winner out of that bunch. I still think, despite the conference record, that Alabama is clearly the best team in the West, which is not saying much. Hats off to Andy Kennedy, who definitely wins the Ryan Freel "doing a lot with a little" award for this season.

2. I continue to be mystified by why Arkansas isn't better than they are. They look great at times. They looked great for stretches of the first half vs. UT. Hat, would you say that Stan Heath is gone, barring a miracle run in the SEC tournament?

4. I'll tag along next time you go. You buy the lap dances, I'll teach you everything I know about college hoops. Won't take too long, mind you.

5. Someone (i.e. jealous UK fan) posted a message a while back on firetubbysmith.com implying that Lofton's ankle sprain made him paranoid, and he's now very likely to declare himself draft eligible. I think this is complete bull. As great of a college player as Lofton is, I don't ever see him being anything more than a role player (at best) in the NBA - guys his size have to have Iverson-like quickness, and Lofton just isn't that quick, and not a great ballhandler. Pure shooters are a dying breed in the NBA. Ask Adam Morrison or J.J. Redick.

I'm not sure if Heath needs a run in the tourney to save his job or not. That said, if he survives this season, he better produce a monster season next year. Also, I think Ray Allen and Michael Redd would dispute the assertion about pure shooters.

Heath is gone. The hog nation was calling for his head before the year started and now heading to the NIT at best means it can only get worse

Allen and Redd are both great shooters, but are stars because they're both athletic (not freakish like the non-shooters in the NBA) enough to get some shots by putting it on the floor if you really belly up and are both in the 6'5" - 6'6" range. Lofton's certainly not that big and not as quick as either of those two. Lofton's greatest strength is that he shoots from deep under duress better than anybody, NBA included.

Never done the one in Pompano, but I can attest that the Cheetah in Atlanta is a nice spot. They used to have the huge backlit fan that was in every hair-band video of the 80's. Not sure if it's still there.

I haven't been to the Atlanta location since the 2000 SEC Basketball tournament. Not sure what the decor is now.

And I almost had a personnel disaster when I overheard my secretary talking with someone about the Cheetah Girls coming to town. Since I only have sons, I had no idea they were a band.

Last time I was at the Atlanta location was my bachelor party in 2004. My buddies and I went there after watching the amazing Tennessee-Florida game (think Wilhoit's 50 yarder) on the big screen at the ESPNZone.

A night to remember! :)
